Sports Betting in Bulgaria
Sports betting is very popular throughout Bulgaria, especially when it comes to wagering on the outcome of European football matches. Bookmakers have been operating for many years in Bulgaria, though they have only been 'officially' legal since 1993. The first private Bulgarian sportsbook (and the largest) is Eurofootball (Еврофутбол), which started running back in 1990, then got its official license from the Bulgarian government in 1993. The company runs more than 800 bet shops and kiosks across Bulgaria.

There is also a government-run sportsbook operating in Bulgaria. It is called Sports Totalizator (or just спорт тото in Bulgarian), and combines a sportsbook with the national lottery. The company gives 50% of all its proceeds to Bulgarian sports organizations. The government takes an additional 35% cut, so the actual company is left with 15% of the profits.

Online Sports Betting in Bulgaria
Online sports betting in Bulgaria is monopolized by Sports Totalizator. Even though online gambling was made legal in Bulgaria in 2008, other Bulgarian sportsbooks are not allowed to take bets on the internet. Eurofootball runs a comprehensive site, but punters must visit a kiosk or bet shop to make bets.

This does not mean Bulgarians have no other choices. Some International sportsbooks target Bulgarian punters, and offer a Bulgarian version of their online sportsbook. While the government frowns upon this, especially considering their monopoly over internet sports betting, there is not much they can do to stop Bulgarians from playing at overseas online sportsbooks.
