As of 2013 the Malaysian mobile market has many players but 83% of the subscribers go through one of three providers: Maxis (34% market share), Celcom (27%) and DiGi (22%). Most of the smaller service providers are virtual network operators riding on the backs of those three giants. Mobile penetration rate is estimated at 144% and more importantly: smartphone penetration itself is nearing 90%.
Although the global smartphone demand growth is slowing, this is not the case for some parts of the world, including Malaysia. Driving the demand are the increasing popularity of Android devices and the dropping prices of entry-level smartphones. Malaysian buyers opted mostly for Samsung’s Galaxy S III model, the iPhone and HTC’s One X in 2012.
With unlimited mobile internet packages available for as low as RM18 (under 6 US dollars), Malaysian punters have the outside gambling world at their fingertips.
