Athletics competition at the Olympics starts this Friday and will last until the last day of the Games. The best women athletes will compete in the track events from Jamaican sprinters to US champions. Dutch long-distance runner Sifan Hassan will try to win a historical treble. Let’s see the women’s Olympic track favorites below.
10 individual and 2 relay gold medals can be won in the women’s track competition at the Olympics. Jamaican and US sprinters can fight for the gold medal in the short distances, while Kenyan and Ethiopian runners are the favorites in the long distances. Unlike the men’s events there is little chance of any European winner in the women’s track events. Unless the Dutch long distance runner, Sifan Hassan makes history in the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m.
Women’s Olympic track favorites in the short distance events
We discussed the favorites of the 100m earlier, so let’s jump to the 200m. Where US athlete Gabby Thomas is the favorite with the odds of 2.89 according to 22BET. She ran the second fastest time of all time in the Olympic trials this year. But she hasn’t got similar results from any major championships yet. Unlike Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo who won the gold medal in Rio in the 400m. The Caribbean athlete is also very fast in this distance. Just like British European champion Dina Asher-Smith who has the odds of 5.80 to win the gold. In the 400m Miller-Uibo can defend her title as predicted by online sportsbooks in Japan. But US fans will hope for another great result from 6-time Olympic champion Allyson Felix.
In the 100m hurdles US sprinter Kendra Harrison and Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn can fight for the gold. Both of them missed the final in the previous Olympics but came back strong in the following years. Harrison is the current world record holder and the silver medalist from the 2019 World Championship. Meanwhile Camacho-Quinn ran five of the six fastest times this year. In the 400m hurdles another American world record holder, Sydney McLaughlin is the top favorite with the odds of 1.43. But her compatriot, the world and Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad will surely try to defend her title. And another young talent, Dutch Femke Bol is also mentioned in the women’s Olympic track favorites. Which is no wonder after she won all Diamond League races this season.
Who can win in the longer distances?
In the 800m another young American, Athing Mu is favored to get the gold with the odds of 1.71 at 22BET. The 19-year-old ran this year’s fastest time in the world. We shall see how she can cope with the pressure in the Olympics. Cuban Rose Mary Almanza is in the best form of her career after running a huge personal best. Her odds to become Olympic champion are 6.85. In the 1500m we might see a European winner thanks to Sifan Hassan. The Dutch runner is the current world champion after she defeated the Olympic champion, Faith Kipyegon in Doha. But the Kenyan athlete is back in top form again and favored to win with the odds of 1.33.
Online gambling sites in Japan expect a tight race in the 3000m steeplechase between Kenyan runners, Hyvin Jepkemoi and Beatrice Chepkoech. American Emma Coburn, who got the bronze in Rio and the silver in Doha will also fight for the gold. Sifan Hassan will also race in the 5000m and 10,000m and try to win an unprecedented treble. In the 5000m the field will be very tough including the world leader Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay. The Kenyan world champion and Olympic silver medalist Hellen Obiri is another top contender. While Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey can be the biggest rival of Hassan in the 10,000m. She broke the Dutch runner’s world record only two days later. She finished behind Hassan in the last World Championship and got the silver. Her odds to win the gold now are 2.75. But Hassan is slightly favored for the victory with the odds of 1.50.
