The Epsom Derby, typically just known as “The Derby”, is often referred to as the greatest flat race of the horse racing world with a history dating all the way back to 1780 and this Saturday the field will assemble for one of the highlights of the racing calendar. But if you’re going to do some Derby betting this weekend just who should you be backing to win?

The Derby originates from a celebration of the Oaks Stakes first running back in 1779, with many of the great, good and probably quite drunk deciding other races of this ilk need be created, the 12th Earl Of Derby was hosting the party this was discussed at and lo, the Epsom Derby came into existence, as did the Bunbury Cup. It is perhaps amusing these days to think that the hoards doing their Derby betting this weekend are carrying on a tradition started by drunk aristocrats on a whim at a good party.

Obviously the race has, since those beginnings, evolved somewhat. The distance now sits at a mile four furlongs and ten yards (that’s around 2,423m), it is only open to three year old thoroughbreds and the prize for coming first is just under a million dollars, with the total purse almost double that. What sets the Derby apart, however, from many of the other big races of the British racing calendar is its proximity to London, and there’s lots of people who like to bet on sports in UK living in London. Epsom will throng with them on Saturday.

Bet365 Has All The Odds On The Epsom Derby

Epsom Derby 2017

• Rekindling – 20/1
• Venice Beach – 14/1
• Dubai Thunder – 14/1
• Best Solution – 12/1
• Capri – 11/1
• Permian – 10/1
• Eminent – 7/1
• Cracksman – 4/1
• Cliffs Of Moher – 4/1

If you live in London The Grand National is in Liverpool, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is out in the sticks somewhere posh and the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket is a bit of a schlep, but the Epsom Downs Racecourse lies within London’s orbital motorway, the M25, and attracts a veritable invasion of fans from the capital. Derby betting might not have the romance of a bet on the Grand National, nor the pedigree of the Gold Cup, but it is still one of the traditional flutters that Britons often partake in.

The bookies like Bet365 give some great Derby betting opportunities, all perfectly legal under UK gambling laws, and there will be some race fans out there that will remember the great ride by Pat Smullen last year on Harzand that handed his High Highness the Aga Khan IV the first winner for his stable since the turn of the century. The question is who’ll come home ahead of the field on Saturday and just who should you be putting your money on? Well lets take a look at the field and see.

Derby Betting A Very Traditional British Flutter

Well for those longshot fans Bet365  is giving Diore Lia 500/1, meaning it hasn’t a hope, and Pealer gets 100/1 with about as much chance. The Anvil is given 50/1 just behind both Salouen and Glencadam Glory which each cop a dismissive 40/1, and ahead of them Crowned Eagle and Wings Of Eagles both get 33/1. At 25/1 on Bet365 you can have Douglas Macarthur, Khalidi or Benbati, and if a 20/1 shot seems a good idea to you, you can grab Rekindling at that price. But what of the top of the field?

Well those in the UK gambling news will be of Venice Beach or Dubai Thunder winning haven’t seen the 14/1 they’re getting, and Best Solution could be disappointed with 12/1 as might Capri getting just 11/1, whilst Permian at 10/1 seems about right. However this will probably come down to a three way battle between Eminent (getting 7/1 right now at Bet365) and the two front runners on 4/1, Cliffs of Moher and Cracksman. Which of these three will hit the front at the right point to get the win? Good question.
