The Royal Windsor Racecourse

Historians date back horse racing in the area to the Henry VIII era, but the first race meeting at Royal Windsor took place in 1866. Since the horse racing is “the sport of Kings”, there’s no surprise the racecourse is under Royal patronage, which delivers an additional flair and privilege to the racetrack.

The Royal Windsor is a unique racetrack – it is the only flat figure-of-eight course in the UK. It’s close proximity to the river Thames have caused trouble in the past with some of the jockeys ending up in the river.

The Racecourse itself covers 165 acres and its facilities can be rented throughout the whole year. A variety of events such as banquettes, conferences, exhibitions, product launches, charity events, and even weddings are a usual occasion at the Royal Windsor.

However, the Royal Windsor is also considered to be the people’s racecourse. When bookies refused bets in 1926 opposing the new betting tax set up by Winston Churchill, the levy was soon thereafter abolished. And when Churchill came down to watch his Colonist II race to victory in the Lime Tree Stakes in 1949, there seemed to be no grudge between Windsor and Winston.

The racecourse remained open during both world wars, aiming to provide much-needed morale boost to the population and London’s defenders.

During its years of operation, the Royal Windsor has seen its share of renowned faces coming there for both business and pleasure. Even now celebrities are flocking to the racecourse both to attend various events and of course to enjoy horseracing. The glamorous events are set in the Riverbank Pavilion, providing additional excitement to whatever the occasion may be.

One of the most intriguing part of the racing calendar is the Monday Evening Racing. These summertime night race meeting have transformed into glamorous occasions, frequented by many stars. Sporting, TV and pop celebrities come to the racetrack to enjoy the show and champagne, turning the Paddock Lawn with a castle view into a huge garden party on Mondays.
