UEFA Champions League 2023-24 Outright Betting: Groups
The UEFA Champions League has historically had eight groups of four teams, adding up to a total of 32 clubs.
Although there are plans to introduce more teams to the competition, the 2023-24 season will follow the same standard as in previous seasons. Below, you will find a complete view of all the groups and the teams belonging to each one.
Group A
Clubs – Bayern, Manchester United, Galatasaray, Kobenhavn
Bayern Munich are the top seeded club in Group A and have the best chance of advancing to the next round. In the first game of the season, they face Manchester United at the Allianz Arena in Germany. In last year’s Champions League, Bayern Munich were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Manchester City. Despite this, they were arguably the best team that City faced in Europe before winning the competition. This year, Bayern have improved their squad, following the addition of Harry Kane.
Harry Kane is the top scorer of the English national football team and Tottenham Hotspurs. This past summer, he shocked the world by signing for the German champions in a bid to win his first professional trophy. Bayern Munich, a team known for winning the German Bundesliga, will certainly hope that Kane will bring European success to the club.
His signature meant that Manchester United, who were tipped as the top club to sign him, missed out on the England captain. Manchester United will be aiming to finish second in the group, but face a difficult away trip to Turkey when they face Galatasaray. In recent years, United have not had much success playing against Turkish teams.
Group B
Club – Arsenal, Sevilla, Lens, PSV
Having missed out on the Champions League for the last seven seasons, Arsenal is making a return to the top competition in Europe. It is the first time they are back in the competition under Mikel Arteta, with the last appearance a 10-2 aggregate defeat against Bayern Munich, coached by Arsene Wenger. Having narrowly missed out on the league last season, Arsenal will be hoping to win their first ever European trophy. The Champions League trophy is one that has avoided Arsenal for many years and one that the fans would love to see their team winning.
The team that Arsenal need to be wary of is Sevilla. Although the Spanish side have never impressed in the Champions League, they are one of the most decorated teams in Europe. Sevilla won a record seventh UEFA Europa League title last season, defeated AS Roma on penalties. The Spanish team had knocked Manchester United out of the competition on their way to glory. Sevilla certainly have what it takes to cause a few upsets in Group B, however Lens and PSV can also cause a few surprises. Group B appears to be an easy one to predict – with Arsenal finishing first – however, the final result may not be as much of a given as one would think.
Group C
Clubs – Real Madrid, Napoli, Union Berlin, Braga
In Group C, all eyes will certainly be on Real Madrid. The Spanish champions are the record holders for the UEFA Champions League, having won it 14 times. They were eliminated from the competition in the semifinals, following a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. Real Madrid have improved their squad with the addition of Jude Bellingham, the young English box-to-box midfielder. However, they also lost one of their star players with Karim Benzema heading to Saudi Arabia.
This could potentially be the last season we see Carlo Ancelotti manage Real Madrid. He will be excited for the tie against Napoli, a team that he has previously managed. Napoli won the Serie A last season for the third time. However, this year the club have not been able to replicate their title winning form.
The match between Real Madrid and Napoli could decide which team would finish first and second respectively. It must also be noted that one cannot underestimate Union Berlin. Featuring in the UEFA Champions League for the first time, the German club had a string of success last season in the Bundesliga. They could be a dark horse to keep an eye on as they may potentially cause a few upsets in Group C.
Group D
Clubs – Benfica, Inter, Real Sociedad, RB Salzburg
Group D is a tamer group, compared to the ones mentioned above. It features last year’s finalists and runner-up, Inter Milan. Inter were unfortunate not to score a goal in the final, having had the better chances between the two teams. They were eventually defeated by Manchester City, courtesy of a Rodri goal. This season, Inter have slightly weakened, with Romelu Lukaku leaving the club and Andre Onana joining Manchester United. Inter will believe that they can win the group and in fairness, they are certainly expected to do so.
The team that they should be cautious about is Benfica. Last season, Benfica won the Liga Nos title and played some of the most exciting and attacking football in the league. The Portuguese team will believe that they can put up a strong fight against Inter and will have the ability to come out on top. Benfica will also have to be careful of Real Sociedad, who have shown some talent in their games. Sociedad is a Spanish club and if there is one thing we have learned about European football, Spanish teams are among the best. They will have a fantastic chance of finishing second and relegating Benfica to the Europa League.
Group E
Clubs – Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Feyenoord, Celtic
For the first time in what feels like ages, Celtic are back in the biggest competition in European football. The Scottish champions are pitted in a more difficult group, with the likes of Atletico Madrid and Lazio both featuring. Atletico Madrid has always been a heavy-weight teams to consider under the guidance of Diego Simeone.
However, last season, Lazio came through as an unexpected yet delightful surprise in Italian football, finishing in the Champions League places and justifying the appointment of Maurizio Sarri. The team have failed to start the season strongly but did manage to defeat Napoli away from home. A winning start in the Champions League at home to Atletico Madrid could be the thing to kick-start the season for Lazio.
In addition to these teams, Feyenoord make a return to the Champions League. The Dutch club are not the worst in the group with many predicting them to finish above Celtic. However, it almost seems nailed on that Lazio and Atletico Madrid will finish in the top two places, ensuring they continue their run into the knock-out stages of the competition. Should that happen, third place is up for grabs with either Celtic or Feyenoord going to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.
Group F
Clubs – Milan, Dortmund, Newcastle, PSG
Group F is known as “The Group of Death”. Not because ‘death’ rhymes with ‘F’ but simply because of the teams involved. There is not a team in Group F that one could underestimate. PSG are always known as a heavyweight team in the Champions League.
Not so long ago, they were playing in the Champions League final, only to be defeated by Bayern Munich. In addition, AC Milan were playing a Champions League semi-final last season. Dortmund are known as a team that almost always qualifies to the knockout stages of the competition. As for Newcastle, the team is making their first Champions League appearance ever. Although many would not believe they have what it takes to advance, the Magpies have added some quality players to the mix and were deserved fourth place finishers last season, pipping Liverpool to the Champions League spots.
Milan sold one of their best players to Newcastle. The addition of Sandro Tonali will make the English side’s midfield even more compact. PSG may have sold Neymar but they brought in replacements in the form of Ousmane Dembele and Goncalo Ramos. The French team have also changed their manager, adding Luis Enrique to the side to try and revitalize their chances of European glory. As the build-up to Group F continues, we can expect many exciting games from this group.
Group G
Clubs – Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Crvena Zvezda, Young Boys
Group G is quite the opposite of Group F. Manchester City is most definitely going to finish top of the group. Additionally, it is more than likely that RB Leipzig will finish second. The two teams have played against each other numerous times in recent years with Manchester City always coming out on top. This season, we can expect to see the exact same thing.
There is not much else that can be said about Group G. Manchester City will finish first of the group and one can only guess how many goals Erling Haaland will score during the opening six games. Last season, he scored five goals against RB Leipzig during a single leg of, the knockout stages of the tournament. During the group stage this year, the Norwegian striker may feel even more invited to score plenty of more goals against teams that are simply not as good.
Group H
Clubs – Barcelona, Porto, Shakhtar, Royal Antwerp
Finally, Group H is going to be another group that may not have the most colourful teams but will certainly have a lot of competition. FC Barcelona are expected to top this group, given the fact that they have not progressed to the knockout stages of the tournament for a few years now. Barcelona will have an easy start to the group stage, playing at home against Royal Antwerp, the team expected to finish last. They brought in several new players including the likes of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix. Playing alongside Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona should realistically have no problems in finishing first.
The more exciting conversation of the group is based on who will finish second. The teams in question are Porto and Shakhtar, unless Royal Antwerp pull off one of the surprises of the season. Porto will play their first game away against Shakhtar and will know the importance of avoiding a defeat. Should they draw the game, or even potentially win away from home, they will have a fantastic chance of advancing to the knockout stages of the competition. One of the star players for Porto is Mehdi Taremi, the Iranian striker that has scored some wonderful goals in his career.
