The fantastic players who left their mark on the world of tennis for ever.
It is important to remember how there is no such thing as the greatest tennis player.
• Djokovic defeated Federer in the Italian Open
• Nadal is the best on clay
• Agassi has built an empire
The list will include ten amazing athletes who have each shown an incredible performance. It is definite that these players deserve to be in the top but there will always be confusion among those who enjoy to bet on sports in the US on who exactly is the best.
Rafael Nadal
It is safe to say that Nadal is the greatest clay court player of all time. His foot technique not only plays with the slippery surface but makes it an advantage. The Spanish player started out as a football player but at the age of 12 he chose tennis over soccer. He turned pro at the age of 16 and has been a strong competitor ever since. He is the first man who has won eight Grand Slams when he defeated David Ferrer in the 2013 Roland Garros final. He won five of his French Open titles in a row, becoming the only player who has ever won five consecutive titles on the Garros. Nadal is also the third to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. He has a record of 27 ATP Masters titles as well. The list of his achievements could go on forever but it is fair to say he is an incredible player.
Roger Federer
Possibly the biggest debate in the tennis era is if Federer or Nadal deserves the title for the best player and it is impossible to say. Looking at the result of online sportsbooks in the US, last season or even this year’s results it is obvious that Federer would be on top but before that there were a good few years of Nadal beating him. Federer is known for his elegant technique. He is hands down the most flawless tennis player in history. He has 17 Grand Slam titles and has been leading the world singles ranking for 302 weeks. The Swiss is one of the older players with his 32 years but is on a rise. The old battle of Nadal and Federer has turned into a battle with Novak Djokovic who beat the Swiss in yesterday’s Italian Open final.
Pete Sampras
The second longest time being No.1 on the world singles rankings belongs to Sampras with 286 weeks. He has seven Wimbledon titles and has won the US Open five times. His last event before his retirement in 2002 was also a US Open, where he defeated his great rival Andrea Agassi. He turned pro at the age of 16 and fought himself into the top 100 in the same year. The great player had the possible best second serve ever. As funny as it sounds for the modern tennis fans he had only played with one single type of racket his entire career.
Rod Laver
The Australian player is the only man on earth who has ever completed and won four Grand Slam titles in the same year, gambling news reported. He also holds the record of most single titles in one year with an astonishing number of 22 titles. He mostly relied on his serve and volley game spiced up with great groundstrokes. He started out as an amateur and then turned pro for only a short period of time but his results were stunning. During his 23 years long career he won an unbelievable 47 pro singles titles. Later in 1998 he has suffered a major stroke but luckily recovered and still plays tennis and golf with friends.
Andre Agassi
The American has eight Gran Slam wins and an Olympic golf medal from the 1996 games. He was the first to win all four Grand Slam tournaments on hard, clay and grass as well. Since Agassi won the French Open in 1999 and the Australian Open in 2003 there hasn’t been an American topping in any of the prestigious competitions. Agassi is often thought of as the best serve returner of all time as well as one of the most popular players. He was a player of short games and technical quick finishes. A signature play of his career was a change up drop shot to the deuce court after strong groundstrokes.
