This Week in Pictures: November 8th to 14th, 2016

We take a look back at the biggest story of last week that reverberated around the world and look back at some of the stories you might have missed whilst it dominated the media.

In the United States last week the long race to the White House finally reached a climax as US voters went to the polls to choose between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, producing one of the most dramatic upsets in political history as the pollsters, pundits, politicians themselves and the public, both in the US and further afield, all had their expectations demolished by the seismically surprising result.

Following a hard fought campaign that had seen the billionaire Donald Trump take on and defeat some of the most well established figures in the Republican party, including Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz in the drawn out primary season, and Hillary Clinton quash a revolution in the ranks led by long suffering socialist Bernie Sanders who had galvanized the youth vote, the final weeks were marked by revelations and investigations.

A recording of Donald Trump surfaced in which he was less the gallant towards women, and some might say bragged of sexual assault, whilst the FBI director James Comey re-opened the can of worms that was Hillary Clinton’s emails after more were found found on the computer of Anthony Wiener, estranged husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Just days later this further investigation was said to clear Hillary but by then the damage was done.

In a polarizing result many of the disenchanted white working class supported Donald Trump with surprising quantities of support from women and Hispanics, both groups expected to heavily favour Hillary Clinton, but as the results rolled in it became clear that this was not going to be the election of the first female President of the US but something even more revolutionary; the election of a complete amateur to the highest public office in the country.

Donald Trump will be sworn in as President of the United States of America on January 20th 2017.

In sports the Formula One season will go down to the last race in Abu Dhabi following Lewis Hamilton getting victory in the deluge ridden Brazilian Grand Prix that saw two red flags and three restarts behind the safety car, but the question is can he finished far enough ahead of Nico Rosberg to snatch the title away from the German? Meanwhile the world of music mourned the death of Leonard Cohen the legendary musician whose career had included numerous classics such as Hallelujah and earned him the nickname of “The Godfather of Gloom”. He passed away at the age of 82. Tributes flooded in from the music and entertainment community with many recalling one of his most famous lines. “There is a crack in everything,” Cohen once quipped, “that’s how the light gets in.” There’s just a little less of it now.
