This Week in Pictures: July 12 – July 18, 2016

The world produced a number of news highlights last week so we take a moment to review some of the most important from the last seven days.

In the UK Andrea Leadsom one of two candidates left in the race to be leader of the ruling Conservative Party dropped out of the competition leaving the way open for rival Theresa May who became Britain’s second female Prime Minister on Wednesday last week after David Cameron officially resigned. Mrs. May’s cabinet appointments included Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary, David Davis as “Brexit” Secretary and Andrea Leadsom as Environment Secretary.

In France a terrorist attack in Nice saw a large delivery truck purposely driven into crowds of revelers at a firework display on the seafront promenade celebrating Bastille Day, a national holiday. At least 84 people were killed, as Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove for two kilometers into the crowded pedestrian area. 303 people were admitted to hospital following the attacks, and thirty one year old French Tunisian Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was shot dead at the scene by police officers.

In Turkey a military coup attempt failed last week as elements of the army staged an uprising against the authoritarian and increasingly dictatorial Islamic leaning AK government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Seizing the State Television station and blocking the two bridges over the Bosphorus they claimed control of the country to protect secular freedom. However in the early hours of Saturday, after 265 deaths, soldiers began to surrender as the government regained control and a purge of the army began.

In sports Spaniard Marc Marquez added to his lead at the top of the Moto GP World Championship with a win in Germany keeping it on the tarmac after torrential rain earlier in the day had marred the Moto 2 and Moto 3 races. Can he keep on this winning streak and take the title at the end of the season? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime here’s a look back at some of the major news stories from around the world we covered over the course of the last week.

Meanwhile in the United States there were, in the seven days to Saturday, another eight mass shootings that left ten people dead and twenty five injured. This means that in 2016 thus far 226 people have died in such incidents with an alarming 721 people wounded. This compares with just 28 people killed and 94 injured in similar criminal events in Europe during the same time period. Only one of the shootings last week in the US received any media attention when two court bailiffs were killed in Michigan.
