In the UK Andrea Leadsom one of two candidates left in the race to be leader of the ruling Conservative Party dropped out of the competition leaving the way open for rival Theresa May who became Britain’s second female Prime Minister on Wednesday last week after David Cameron officially resigned. In France a terrorist attack in Nice saw a large delivery truck purposely driven into crowds of revelers at a firework display on the seafront promenade celebrating Bastille Day, a national holiday. At least 84 people were killed, as Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove for two kilometers into the crowded pedestrian area. 303 people were admitted to hospital following the attacks, and thirty one year old French Tunisian Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was shot dead at the scene by police officers.
In Turkey a military coup attempt failed last week as elements of the army staged an uprising against the authoritarian and increasingly dictatorial Islamic leaning AK government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Seizing the State Television station and blocking the two bridges over the Bosphorus they claimed control of the country to protect secular freedom. However in the early hours of Saturday, after 265 deaths, soldiers began to surrender as the government regained control and a purge of the army began.
