This Week in Pictures: January 31 – February 06, 2017

The world wasn’t short of big news stories last week so we take a moment to look back at some of the major events of the last seven days.

In the United States the executive order on immigration issued by President Donald Trump had a turbulent week as it first caused chaos at numerous airports across the country, was then struck down by James L Robart in the State of Washington as unconstitutional, allowing those excluded from entry to enter the US, after which the administration challenged the ruling, but was denied by the appeals court requiring a full hearing instead which may well end up going all the way to the Supreme Court.

In France the famous Louvre Museum was the scene of another terrorist attack when a man believed to be in his thirties attacked soldiers on guard at the popular tourist attraction with a knife whilst reportedly shouting “Allahu Akbar”. One soldier was knocked to the ground, another wounded and the attacker, an Egyptian national was shot several times in the abdomen. The attack comes just three months before the French presidential election making security a hot topic for the campaign ahead.

In Romania there were massive street protests against a government decree weakening anti-corruption laws, in what was widely seen as an attempt by the government of the PSD to have charges against many of its officials, gained in the anti-corruption drive of the last few years, nullified. Huge crowds gathered in the streets, numbering up to half a million, and after several days of repeated protests of such a massive scale the government caved in to the demands of the masses and rescinded the decree.

In sports, for the first time in its history, the Super Bowl went into overtime as the New England Patriots came back from a massive first half deficit against the Atlanta Falcons on a thrilling night in Houston. Eventually winning 34-28 the Patriots quarterback Tom Brady pulled off the biggest recovery ever seen at the NFL event, but will they be able to come back and do it again next year? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out but in the meantime here’s some stories we covered last week.

Meanwhile Lady Gaga might have dropped her mic at the Super Bowl Half Time Show but as she proved with her costume changes she’s not about to drop the ball and according to rumor and gossip merchants TMZ she is about diversify a little to launch her very own brand of wine (because what says quality alcohol more than Lady Gaga?). Expected to be called “Grigio Girls”, after the bonus track on her 2016 album Joanne, it is not yet known what it’ll taste like. Although one could guess, n’est pas?
