This Week in Pictures: April 11 – 17, 2017

There was no shortage of big news stories breaking around the world last week so in case you missed something important here’s a quick round up.

In the United States Donald Trump increased the pressure on China to assist in the prevention of North Korea to further develop nuclear weapons with additional military assets being moved into the region last week. The North Koreans staged military parade and a missile test that was reported to have failed leading to the Vice President of the USA, Mike Pence, to warn that the “Era of strategic patience is over” as nations across the region voice alarm at the escalation and officials warn of dire consequences.

In Syria a bus evacuating people from the Fuaa and Kafraya as part of a deal between rebels and the regime of Bashar al-Assad was targeted by a suicide car bomber killing 126 people, nearly 70 of whom were children. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack which also wounded three workers for the Syrian Red Crescent, Over 7,000 people have been moved as part of the deals that see rebels moved from areas surrounded by government forces to areas controlled by their compatriots.

In the Vatican Pope Francis marked the Easter weekend with a homily during his traditional mass in St Peter’s Square making mention of the suffering around the world including wars, oppressive regimes, corruption and human trafficking, famine and domestic violence, urging people to hold on to their faith. Around 60,000 were in Rome amid tight security to see the Pope, attendance figures down on a 100,000 high in previous years, the pontiff touring the crowd in his open-topped pope-mobile.

In sports Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton into second place at the Bahrain Grand Prix giving the Ferrari driver two wins out of three races, but does this really spell the end to Mercedes’ dominance of Formula One or is this just an early season blip that will soon give way to the skill and power of the silver arrows? Meanwhile in Ohio an eight year-old boy stole the keys to his fathers van as his parents were sleeping and set off in pursuit of a McDonalds cheeseburger with his four year-old sister along for the ride. Driving a mile and half without incident with witnesses attesting to his road safety that the child himself is said to have ascribed to his learning to drive on YouTube. The children were recognized by a family friend in the restaurant and their grand parents were called to collect them. No charges were filed.
