The week in pictures: June 2 – June 8, 2015

With so many exciting news stories hitting the headlines in the last week perhaps we should quickly review the big stories of the last seven days

Last week saw the newly re-elected FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, resign after continued revelations about corruption and bribery emerge from international football’s governing body. With ongoing FBI and Swiss investigations assisted by former insiders Chuck Blazer and Jack Warner FIFA’s future is overshadowed by suspicions of voting irregularities in the bidding process for the World Cups in both Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. Both countries strenuously deny any wrong-doing.

In China the Eastern Star, a Yangtze river cruise ship, capsized last week in the country’s worst maritime disaster in nearly 70 years. Carrying mostly elderly tourists from Nanjing to Chongqing, the ship’s overturning was blamed by local authorities on sudden severe winds, but have taken both the captain and first engineer into police custody as the death toll rose to 406. There were only 14 survivors, some of whom had been trapped in air pockets and pulled from the upturned hull by divers.

Fourteen new cases of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) have been reported in South Korea as a fifth person dies from the disease according to health officials. This brings the total number of patients suffering from the ailment to 64 making it the most sizable outbreak beyond the Middle East yet. In an effort to prevent the spread of the disease that originated in Saudi Arabia and was first identified in humans in 2012 which has a 27% death rate, authorities have quarantined 1,600 people.

In sport American Pharoah became the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37 years as it romped home in the Belmont Stakes having already won the rain drenched Preakness and the world famous Kentucky Derby. Will we have to wait another four decades to see the feat repeated? 5. Election posters of cowboy John Erik Wagner, who is standing for Prime Minister in Denmark, attract contradictory reactions.

6. Juventus manages to make the Champions League final an exciting and close game.

7. Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers signes a contract with Pepsi after his one-time marketing shot as “Uncle Drew” proved immensely popular last season.

Meanwhile wasting police time is often bemoaned by law enforcement who find themselves subjected to spurious and frivolous requests from the public but a police dispatcher in Stamford, Connecticut, took pity on a 9-11 caller who reported being unable to enter his home due to his cat being overly aggressive having just given birth. Officers were able to assist the man and his family reentering their property and a recording of the emergency call has gone viral across the internet.
