Anyone who bet on the Labour Party to do better in the local elections was kidding themselves. Even if you didn’t bet on the Conservative Party to win in Hartlepool you knew it wasn’t going to end well. Now, however, you have to wonder if Labour will continue to bet on Keir Starmer leading them to victory. It seems unlikely. Hence the odds on Andy Burnham as the next leader of the Labour Party have tumbled at online sportsbook sites in the UK like Bet365 recently.

To be clear, I take responsibility, no one else.” Said Keir Starmer after the local elections. “I lead the Labour Party.” He continued just in case anyone had forgotten who he was. “It is entirely on me.” Which is not so much falling on one’s sword as using it as a crutch. Good leaders should take their share of the blame. It’s true. However, don’t bet on Keir Starmer getting any kudos for doing so. Especially as his focus on his own culpability doesn’t really seem to fit with his plans.

We are not good enough yet at focusing on voters.” You can always bet on Keir Starmer to sound convincing when speaking. He was a very good lawyer as his appearances at PMQs underline. However, it does all sound a bit aloof, a bit tentative. So, when he then went on to say; “For too long people have been set against each other” it sounded like a dull history lecture. The odds on Labour winning the next election at online betting sites in the UK are now ghastly.

Bet365 Sees Odds On Angela Rayner As Next Leader Shrink

Everyone knows Labour is underperforming. They have seen a string of unelectable leaders who have lost to substandard Conservative opponents in favorable circumstances. They bet on Keir Starmer to lead them out of the Corbynite forest only to find he doesn’t really have a compass. For his part, Keir decided to blame Angela Rayner. He moved to shift her only to find she had more than enough gravitas to push back. When the shadow reshuffle came, she got to stay.

For too long we have given off an air of talking down to people,” Angela’s words were carefully chosen to echo those of her dear leader. “Telling people what they need or even what they should want or what they should think.” She was pulling no punches. That’s why anyone taking advantage of UK gambling laws will find she’s now just 6/1 to lead Labour next. Although, for comparison, a bet on Andy Burnham is going at 11/4. So should you bet on Keir Starmer going?

Don’t  Bet On Keir Starmer Winning Labour Over

Well probably not just yet. Certainly, he seems apt to stay on, but the odds on Keir Starmer winning an election look pretty long. Many in the party will want to bet on Angela Rayner instead. She’s setting out a bold new green vision. You can bet on Keir Starmer writing quips to use against Boris Johnson in the Westminster Village rather well, but connecting with voters? Both Burnham and Rayner would, and probably will, do that far better than the former QC.

“We’ve been losing elections for 11 years.”

  • Sir Keir Starmer – Leader of the Labour Party

“[There is] No hiding the bitter disappointment of the results, particularly in Hartlepool.” Keir lamented before attempting to sell the idea the Labour Party could change the culture of politics in the UK. Don’t ever bet on politics in the UK changing. That’s like a bet on sports in the UK suddenly ceasing to be sexist, racist and homophobic. Ridiculous. Keir will in time realize this and quit so the odds on the next leader of the Labour Party will suddenly be far more interesting.
