South Dakota to Expand Gambling

Under pressure to maintain competitive state lawmakers mull allowing more games at casinos.

A proposal submitted to the South Dakota legislature would allow casinos in the city of Deadwood to expand the slate of games available. The proposed change would allow them to offer craps, roulette and keno, in addition to the currently provided poker, blackjack and slots.

The move would be significant for Deadwood’s casinos, which operate under heavy restrictions. American gambling laws allow to states to make their own rules with regards to the activity. South Dakota opened its first casino in 1989 but limits the type of games that can be offered.

Market for more games

While players certainly enjoy blackjack and American poker rooms, it is clear that expanding the variety of games would bring more people through the doors. Craps and Roulette are classic Vegas games that enjoy worldwide popularity, and keno is an interactive game which is enjoyed by many Americans.

South Dakota has 35 commercial casinos which pull in an average of $107 million in annual revenue. However, state officials and casino officials are becoming concerned that competition from nearby states will erode their revenue. The popular Old West tourist destination of Deadwood is the state’s main gambling center, so expanding gaming there will have a big effect on the state.
