You have to be an optimist to be captain of the England Cricket team. Joe Root is no exception. Having won the fourth test and got a 3-1 series win he bubbled with praise, hopes, and dreams. However, the odds on England to win the Ashes demonstrate he is a slightly rose-tinted view of the future. Bookies like Bet365, one of the biggest online betting sites in the UK, give them barely 3/1. Apparently beating South Africa doesn’t mean you can take on the Aussies at home.

You can always bet on Test cricket to be tricky away from home. Winning a series abroad is no simple task, so England were rightfully pleased to have beaten South Africa 3-1. After their initial loss, England didn’t just pull themselves together but began to play real cricket. The team rose to the challenge well with some superb individual performances, but was it enough? The odds on England to win the Ashes don’t seem to suggest so. Then again, Australia are not South Africa.
