You have to be an optimist to be captain of the England Cricket team. Joe Root is no exception. Having won the fourth test and got a 3-1 series win he bubbled with praise, hopes, and dreams. However, the odds on England to win the Ashes demonstrate he is a slightly rose-tinted view of the future. Bookies like Bet365, one of the biggest online betting sites in the UK, give them barely 3/1. Apparently beating South Africa doesn’t mean you can take on the Aussies at home.

You can always bet on Test cricket to be tricky away from home. Winning a series abroad is no simple task, so England were rightfully pleased to have beaten South Africa 3-1. After their initial loss, England didn’t just pull themselves together but began to play real cricket. The team rose to the challenge well with some superb individual performances, but was it enough? The odds on England to win the Ashes don’t seem to suggest so. Then again, Australia are not South Africa.

We feel the sky’s the limit for this team.” Enthused Joe Root, England Captain. He’s bet on the Ashes being a realistic goal. They could well be, but the odds on England to win the Ashes aren’t encouraging. Perhaps that’s why he that up with; “So we’ve got to keep looking to improve.” Which might encourage some to take advantage of UK gambling laws to back the boys. That said, it might encourage quite a few Australians to bet on Australia to win the Ashes instead.

Joe Sees Bright Future For England Test Side…..Again

We’ve done extremely well in the last three games.” Said Joe Root leaving out the all-important ‘against South Africa’ caveat. However, he did nod at the Ashes odds they’re getting, admitting that, “In the last three years we’ve not been consistent enough.” Which will perhaps go down as the understatement of 2020. Well. Unless the Coronavirus kills 90% of us, I guess. Somewhat ironically, a viral global pandemic could actually improve the odds on England to win the Ashes. Just don’t tell Joe.

That inconsistency is precisely why the odds on England to win the Ashes are still so long. It’s something the side have to address. Superb individual performances can be so fleeting and unreliable. Just ask anyone who likes to bet on sports in the UK. Joe believes they’ve a solution now. “We’ve got a great template to work around and it’s nice to see it falling into place.” Just how far the Ashes odds on Australia will fall, however, is a completely different question.

Australia ARE a completely different side of South Africa. South Africa lack a depth of squad really. The Aussies will have home field advantage and have precious few weak spots. The odds on Australia to win the Ashes are 1/2, right now at Bet365. That’s way shorter than the odds on England to win the Ashes. Apparently, the bookies haven’t been as impressed as Joe Root. Then again they think Ben Stokes will be the next Captain. He was Man of the Series and then fined.

15% of the 4th Test match fee was deducted from the bookies’ favorite to be the next England captain. Stokes took umbrage with an insult from an idiot in the crowd and audibly called him a “four-eyed ****”. Leadership is not what it was. Perhaps that’s why the odds on England to win the Ashes at online sportsbook sites in the UK are so long. They lack control. They might win the Ashes yet, but most sensible people will still bet on Australia before they’ll bet on England. Most crazy people too.

Ben Stokes As Captain In 2020

We take a look at why despite Joe Root’s optimism the odds on England to win the Ashes are still way out at 3/1.
