Six tennis players arrested over the weekend are being investigated for fixing matches in both Spain and Portugal.
Match-fixing is an unfortunate reality in sports. It occurs from time to time, but the athletes involved aren’t always caught. That’s not the case here, as six tennis players arrested over the weekend are officially being investigated for fixing games in lower-tier tournaments in both Spain and Portugal.
The Associated Press claims the athletes were involved in a fixing network that made over $500,000 in both futures and challengers bets. The Spanish gambling news did not reveal the names of the players involved, but reports claim they are ranked somewhere between 800 and 1,200 in the world. If found guilty, the tennis players arrested could face up to four years in prison.
Khalid Ali, the secretary general of betting integrity group ESSA, told media in a statement that there is “concern at the continuing integrity issues within the sport,” and ESSA “welcomed the more proactive approach to combating match-fixing being displayed by the sport’s governing authorities”.
