The leader of Fine Gael and the caretaker of the Irish interim government Leo Varadkar is under huge pressure. Several voices have asked Mr. Varadkar to resign after Fine Gael’s crushing defeat in the general elections of February 08. Should Mr. Varadkar decide to step down, his deputy Simon Coveney is favored by next Fine Gael leader odds to replace him.
Fine Gael had the worst-ever performance in the general election, coming third with just under 20.9 percent of the popular vote. They are currently the third-largest party in the Dail, with 35 seats. ِFollowing the dramatic loss, many Fine Gael members have started thinking it is time for the party to rebuild.
According to online sportsbook news in Ireland, if the party does not join in the formation of a government, Mr. Varadkar will be obligated to submit for a vote of confidence. As for now, it is likely that Fine Gael is going into opposition. That means a vote of confidence in Mr. Varadkar’s leadership is almost inevitable. Should he fail to secure a majority he will resign. but who might replace him as per next Fine Gael leader odds? Three names are on top of the list including Simon Coveney, Paschal Donohoe, and Helen McEntee.
Mr. Coveney is the obvious choice
Simon Coveney refuses to challenge Mr. Vardkar for the leadership yet. But, he is the obvious choice at next Fine Gael leader odds with a value of 1.4 as per 1xBET Sportsbook. He holds the position of the deputy leader of the party, and he has been serving as Tanaiste since 2017. Mr. Coveney, 47, has more than 20 years of experience in politics. He previously served as a minister for agriculture, housing, and foreign affairs. His role in the Brexit saga has been praised. Not to mention, he is an effective Dail performer, a quick thinker, and hugely popular within the party.
Paschal Donohoe is one of the party’s intellectuals
Mr. Donohoe is backing Leo Varadkar to remain in power as the Fine Gael leader. But, he will play a central role in helping the party to bounce back. That might require Mr. Donohoe to run in the leadership contest with 8.5 odds to win. Mr. Donohoe has been serving as the Minister of Finance since 2017. Previously he served as the minister of transportation, and a minister of state. He has been a TD for Dublin Central since 2011. No doubt that he is among the top candidates, being considered as one of the party’s intellectuals.
Helen McEntee is highly regarded across the EU
One of the youngest leaders in Fine Gael Helen McEntee, 33, has been serving as the Minister of State for European Affairs since 2017. She has been also the TD for the Meath East constituency since 2013. Her work in Brexit negotiations was commended by Donald Tusk, of the European People’s Party.
