The 89th Academy Awards may still be a few months away, but members of PaddyPower can already bet on the Oscars winner for best supporting actor!
We’re coming into the end of 2017, and there are a number of strong contenders to win this year’s Oscar for best supporting actor. Here we will take a look at the top four betting favorites according to PaddyPower.
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight
Leading the best supporting actor betting lines is Mahershala Ali for his performance in the Barry Jenkins-directed film Moonlight. Ali has received universal acclaim for his portrayal of a struggling dealer in Miami during the war on drugs.
Moonlight is also considered by many to be the favorite to win best picture at the 2017 Oscars. It focuses on a sensitive subject for many Americans today, and is in many ways a breakthrough film in its originality.
Mahershala Ali’s odds to win the best supporting actor are currently listed at 7/4. He is certainly up against a number of fellow worthy actors, but a bet on the favorite here might be your best gamble.
Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea
Another highly-acclaimed film that flew under the radar this year was Manchester by the Sea, directed by Kenneth Lonergan. In the supporting actor role was Lucas Hedges, an up and coming actor with notable roles in films such as the Grand Budapest Hotel and Labor Day.
In this film, Hegdes plays a young man who is forced to move in with his estranged uncle after his father dies. The tremendous script and beautiful cinematography of the film were notable, but it was the performances of both Lucas Hedges and Casey Affleck that made this movie a potential Oscar winner.
If you plan to bet on the Oscars best supporting actor, Hedges might be a good choice. His odds to win are currently set at 7/2. This film may also make UK gambling news for winning multiple awards including best picture.
Michael Shannon – Nocturnal Animals
Michael Shannon had one of the busiest acting schedules of anyone in 2016, appearing in 10 films, one of which he was an executive producer for. The most celebrated of these was without a doubt Nocturnal Animals, in which he played a detective looking to solve a murder.
The critical consensus was partially split on Tom Ford’s second directorial debut, but strong performances from Shannon and Amy Adams helped to push the film as a potential Oscar winner.
Shannon’s PaddyPower odds to win the award this year are currently set at 6/1. Most online sportsbooks in the UK agree he is a bit of a long shot, but a win here is certainly possible.
Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water
For many interested in making a bet on the Oscars best supporting actor this year, it is a surprise to see Jeff Bridges as one of the betting underdogs. Hell or High Water is considered to be one of, if not the best films of this year, and Bridges was a key reason the movie was so highly reviewed.
In reality, the role of a gritty sheriff searching for bank robbers was perfect for Bridges. He has played similar characters in the past before, but this may be his crowning achievement. Jeff Bridges’ odds to win the prestigious award are currently set at 9/1.
