Phil Mickelson Is Still An Outside Bet On The 2021 US Open

No one saw it coming, least of all Phil Mickelson. At 115th in the world he was, to say the least, a very unlikely winner of the PGA Championship. A man thought to have had his day. However, the 50 year old stormed to a stunning victory and now looks ahead to Torrey Pines. Not that he’s a particularly good bet on the 2021 US Open. Online sportsbook sites in the US like Bovada give him rather long odds. But, in a year when underdogs keep winning, longshots are the bet du jour. 

“I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like that before.” Phil Mickelson, veteran of the PGA Tour and countless tournaments, said following his victory. He’d gone into the final round at Kiawah Island with a one stroke lead, then held off Brooks Koepka to win by two shots. Even he seemed impressed. However, despite this astonishing win, he’s still not a great bet on the 2021 US Open. Or at least, and this is vital, he’s not getting very good odds on the 2021 US Open. 

So at first glance, he’s not the bet on the 2021 US Open you would think is most apt. There are others with far shorter prices at online betting sites in the US like Bovada than his. But you do have to put this in the context of the current zeitgeist. In 2021, apparently, underdogs, those the bookies price long, keep on winning. Both majors so far. Hideki Matsuyama was a worthy winner of the Masters, but a bit of a surprise. Then Phil Mickelson arose from the grave to win.

He is one of the favorites and he missed the cut at Kiawah Island. Sure, he’s carrying an injury, but will it really recover in just a month? No, probably not. Of course, neither of them played particularly well at Kiawah Island either. Rahm might have put in an average performance for someone of his skills, but Rory just looked out of his depth. Some might think he’s already had his underdog win this year. He certainly doesn’t look capable of taming Torrey Pines. So those taking advantage of US gambling laws to bet on the 2021 US Open at Bovada and the like might want to look a little further down the list of prices on offer.

Given Harrington and Lowry both finished T4 you may want to trust the luck of the Irish. Sure that would usually mean a bet on Rory McIlroy but a bet on Shane Lowry is going for 66/1.
