Traditionally, they nominated three films each year – though there were a couple of exceptions throughout the years. They created the category itself in 1981 as the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The reason was that there were complaints about the makeup in The Elephant Man (1980) not getting the honor it deserved. The award got its current name in 2012, at the 85th Academy Awards. So far, it is Rick Baker who is the most successful in winning the award. The world-famous makeup artist already won 7 Oscars and was nominated 11 times! Last year it was Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan, and Vivian Baker to win the prize for the movie Bombshell (2019).
