Operators Look to Enter Bulgaria’s Online Gambling Market

PokerStars, Betfair and other international operators target Bulgaria’s online gambling market.

After the recent change in Bulgarian gambling laws, which has resulted in more reasonable and lower tax rates and licensing costs, more operators are interested in targeting Bulgaria’s online gambling market.

Poker giant PokerStars along with online sportsbook Betfair are vying to enter the country’s regulated online gambling market.

Since the online gambling tax regime was changed from 15% of turnover to 20% of gross gaming revenue, a flood of operators, including Bulgaria’s own Eurofootball Bulgaria, have shown interest in the country.

The State Commission on Gambling is currently reviewing the flood of new license applications, which could mean that the Malta-licensed Eurofootball, the main online sportsbook in Bulgaria, could be in for some company.

A lot has changed in the region, since it was only six months ago that PokerStars had been blacklisted as an unapproved operator in Bulgaria’s gambling dark moment.

The famous blacklist still exists, and it has been amended to include four new domains including 32Red and BetFlag. Although, it did remove French poker site Winamax since it withdrew its services from the Bulgarian digital realm.

Things have been spiraling for the country since its changes in the laws, as it is also preparing itself for a dramatic expansion in the online gambling industry by using UK player protection agency eCOGRA as its official tester for the software systems.
