The Senate Impeachment Trial May Deserve An Award Too

Washington DC is, the old joke says, just Hollywood for ugly people. Given some of the theatrics in the Senate recently, that’s easily believed. Naturally, a bet on Donald Trump being impeached is a little silly. Unfortunately, so are lots of the 2020 Oscars betting odds. Online betting sites in the US like Bovada barely offer any opportunity so short priced at the favorites. What should be a close contest already looks like a foregone conclusion. Much like the impeachment trial alas.
Vapid, disingenuous people more worried about their image than the content of anything they say. Preening before the cameras in hopes of boosting their careers whilst making snide comments about those of others. It’s a cautionary reflection of modern society and all its ills. What’s worse is that Hollywood isn’t much better. The Senate Impeachment Trial is currently making even the 2020 Oscars betting odds look positively unpredictable. And they’re not.
From the Best Picture odds to a bet on Best Actor, the 2020 Oscars betting odds are clear. Sam Mendes gets around 3/10 to be the Best Director for his two hour long OK Go video about WWI. That’s pretty darned short. No one who regularly puts a bet on sports in the US is going to wager against that price. Likewise, 1917 gets 4/7 in the Best Picture category. That almost makes it a shoo-in. So is all this Hollywood, somewhat like the Senate, just going through the motions?
Mendes Leads In Best Picture & Best Director
Well almost. The technical cleverness of Mendes offering does give it a significant edge. Particularly over the blatant pleading for an Oscar offered up by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino. Already recognized for his work in the role, The Joker Joaquin Phoenix gets a scant 1/16. Those are the shortest of the 2020 Oscar betting odds and mean he’s already got the Best Actor prize bagged. No other result is even remotely likely.
Similarly, it would appear the senate actually finding Donald Trump guilty is about as likely as Joaquin losing. The prosecution case seemed to make no impact on Republican senators’ voting intentions. Pretty much like Parasite being a cool film hasn’t changed its 2020 Oscars betting odds. The President’s defense team, on the other hand, should probably win some sort of award for best comedy. Anyone in the US gambling laws of common sense would apply, were wrong.

The Democrats painted the President in the worse light possible. His defense seems determined to put him in the shade. Not that it matters. He’ll still get off. For comparison, a bet on Best Actress being Renee Zellweger gets you barely 1/6 (if you’re lucky). A bet on the senate voting against Donald Trump is a 30/1 shot at best. That two-thirds majority required still far too distant in a Republican majority senate. So, by comparison, the 2020 Oscars betting odds seem almost lively.
Just a shame they’re not. There will be few if any surprises on the night according to the 2020 Oscars betting odds. Hollywood will glitter and sparkle, pat itself on the back and smile for the cameras. The senate, however, will likely steal some of its thunder. The trial of a President is just slightly more important to the public than celebrities. Although far fewer people hit up Bovada, one of the best online sportsbook sites in the US, to wager upon the Impeachment Trial.
