Steven Gerrard, the manager of Premier League side Aston Villa was sacked yesterday after the team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the home of Fulham. The club is only in 17th place in the table, very close to the relegation zone. So the new manager won’t have an easy task keeping them in the top league. Former Tottenham and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino is the favorite to get the job according to the next Aston Villa manager prediction. Let’s see his and the other candidates’ chances.
Steven Gerrard was appointed as the new Aston Villa manager last November when he took over the position from Dean Smith. The former Liverpool and English star didn’t have too much coaching experience, but he got great results at his former club, Rangers. As he won the Scottish Championship with the club without losing a single match in the 2020/21 season.
Gerrard also started well at Villa, after the team won its first match against Brighton under his management. But later in the season they produced mixed results and finished in 14th place. The club’s start of the new season was much worse though. They only won two matches besides three draws and six losses. Their last defeat against Fulham decided Gerrard’s faith and he was sacked last night.
Pochettino Leads In the Next Aston Villa Manager Prediction
Mauricio Pochettino left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer so he would be available straight away. Online sportsbooks in the UK favor him now to replace Gerrard. And offer the smallest odds, 6/4 for his appointment. The Argentine achieved his biggest success with Tottenham where he transformed the team into a top contender. Under his management, the London club finished three times on the podium in the Premier League.
While they were close to winning the Champions League in the 2018/19 season. The form of the team dropped dramatically in the following season and Pochettino was sacked. He took over Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and won the Ligue 1 title in 2022. But PSG was knocked out in the last 16 in the Champions League. Plus neither the players nor the fans liked him too much which led to his departure.
Another possible option to get the job is Sean Dyche, the former manager of Burnley. The 51-year-old manager is used to difficult situations. And he has fought successfully against relegation with his team on several occasions. Dyche is out of work since April and can be a great choice to replace Gerrard. His odds to do that are 3/1. The next Aston Villa manager prediction also mentions Michael Beale among the top candidates.
The current manager of Queens Park Rangers was the assistant of Gerrard at Rangers. And followed him to Birmingham before taking his current role. Being the manager of a Premier League would be a step ahead. But according to the latest news, he rejected the offer of Wolverhampton to be their next manager. So Beale might have a similar answer to Villa’s offer too.
Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel Can also be an Option
Like in other similar situations, the names of other top managers have also come up following Gerrard’s dismissal. One of the most popular options would be the appointment of Unai Emery, the manager of Villareal. The Spanish manager achieved his biggest successes with Sevilla.
But he also reached the Europa League final with Arsenal in the 2018/19 season. He left the Gunners in the following season and returned to Spain. Aston Villa would need to make him a very attractive offer in order to get him back to the UK. Still, his odds to rejoin the Premier League again are not bad at 4/1.
Online gambling sites in the UK offer the same odds for Thomas Frank to become the next Villa boss. The Danish manager took Brentford to the Premier League in 2021. And he also helped the team to stay in the top tier last season. At the moment the club is in 10th place in the table, five points ahead of Aston Villa. Leading a club like Villa with better resources might appeal to Frank though.
Another familiar name that is often mentioned regarding new positions is Rafael Benitez. The Spanish worked last at Everton but he was dismissed at the beginning of this year after a poor run of the team. He has plenty of experience and success, but usually at top teams, not fighting against relegation. His odds of still becoming the new Villa manager are 10/1 at BetVictor.
