Peru has low chances to go through the group stage

Peru will start the tournament by playing against title-favourite Brazil, and stealing a point from Dunga’s men would be a huge success. They will face Venezuela in the second round where they can only aim for winning the game if they want to go to the next stage. And they will play the last group match against Colombia, where again, stealing a point should be regarded as a great achievement.

Peru’s squad represents the Peruvian league

The other three defenders are Luis Advíncula, Yoshimar Yotún and Carlos Zambrano, who are players of Vitória Setúbal, FF Malmö and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

The situation does not differ very much in the midfield. Six out of eight midfielders are selected from the home country’s football league. The two players who are playing out of Peru are 24-year-old Paolo Hurtado, who plays for Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira, and 31-year-old Juan Manuel Vargas, who plays for Italian side Fiorentina. The other midfielders of the squad are Josepmir Ballon, Carlos Lobatón, Edwin Retamoso, Christian Cueva, Joel Sánchez and the squad’s second youngest member, 22 years old Carlos Ascues.

However, it is completely different among the strikers of the national team.
