Moroccan State Lottery Becomes First Moroccan Operator to Gain Responsible Gaming Certificates After Help from Intralot

The state lottery in Morocco, La Marocaine des Jeux et des Sports (MDJS), has gained both the EL and WLA Responsible Gaming Certifications, according to operator Intralot. The company has only been operating since changes to Moroccan gambling laws in 2009 allowed online gambling throughout the North African country.

Greek gambling operator Intralot provides operational services and technology to the MDJS, and has embedded its responsible gaming functionality into the backend of MDJS’s services. As such, the lottery has become the first online gambling site in Morocco to attain these highest responsibility standards.

MDJS Chief Executive, Younes El Mechrafi was adamant that responsible gambling was key to the company’s development, while it is the company’s responsibility to protect against illegal gambling.

“To tackle this issue we propose responsible, entertaining and non addictive games that channel the players to the legal market, after several months of continuous efforts and a very strong mobilisation of MDJS team and stakeholders, we achieved the European Lotteries Responsible Gaming certification along with WLA Level 4 Responsible gaming Framework,” he added.

This is just the latest piece of positive gambling news to come out of Africa, after the sportsbook boom in South Africa extended northwards. With the presence of experienced operator Intralot – through their subsidiary Intralot Maroc – in the country, combined with their recent law changes, Morocco is in good stead to follow suit.

Intralot Maroc Deputy General Manager, Areti Markou, added: “Intralot’s Responsible Gaming strategy in all the jurisdictions where it has presence, either as a licensed operator or a technology and services supplier, is to ensure that players have the choice of well-designed games in a secure and supportive environment, through a set of policies and practices for preventing underage, illegal and problem gambling, and for minimising any potential undesirable impact on society.”
