India’s first female Olympic gymnast was born in the eastern Indian city of Agatala. She began practicing gymnastics at the age of six, and struggled early on due to what her head coach, Biswaswar Nandi, described as “flat feet.”

Dipa Karmakar eventually got past this issue, and quickly established herself as one of India’s most promising athletes. Her first major victory came in 2007 at the Junior Nationals in Jalpaiguri. That event would begin a pattern of victories for the young gymnast, with 77 total medals since 2007, 67 of which were gold.

In 2010, Dipa Karmakar was part of India’s gymnastics contingent at the commonwealth games. It was at these games that Indian sporting legend Ashish Kumar made Indian gambling news by becoming the first Indian gymnast to win gold in a major international gymnastics competition. Kumar’s victory sent Karmakar a message that she too can become an Indian sporting legend.
