Croatian captain Luka Modric fulfils his dreams after winning The Best FIFA Men’s Player for his super achievements over the past year.
FIFA has crowned Croatian captain Luka Modric as the world’s finest footballer, following a spectacular year that saw him make history with both club and country.
Dreams do come true, if you work hard for them
Before attending the swanky event in London on Monday night that saw all of football’s past and present stars come together, Luka Modric was one of the main favourite by online sportsbooks in Croatia to win The Best award. By winning The Best award, he managed to break the long-standing hegemony the award is normally associated with – Ronaldo and previously Messi, when it used to be called the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

Some believed that his former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo was going to swoop the gong again, however, due to the Croat’s “slightly” better achievements with the national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the voters edged to recognize the talented midfielder as the world’s best player.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” professed the 33-year-old Croatian captain, who finished above second-placed Ronaldo and third-placed Salah to clinch The Best award. “I am proud and honoured to be here. It’s been a special night for me and a special moment in my career. It’s very important. There’s no bigger reward than being chosen by so many people. I’d like to thank all the people who’ve helped and supported me all this time.”
Modric will go down in history as Croatia’s best-ever player
No football player in the 26-year existence of the Croatian Football Federation has achieved what Modric has achieved, both individually and collectively. But putting aside his immense successes with Real Madrid over the last few years (which saw them win four Champions League titles in five years), the diminutive midfield maestro will go down in history as Croatia’s footballing talent due to his sacrifice on the field for the national side, especially during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The chequered-board shirts finished as runners-up as they lost in the final to France, but they clinched the silver medal mainly because of Modric, who contributed the lion’s share of the work it took to reach the final in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.
Right after the 2018 World Cup final, he got crowned as the tournament’s best player – the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball – while adding the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award some months later to his trophy cabinet. So having won The Best award on Monday night as his latest gong is yet another testament to his footballing genius.
When asked about his previous year’s achievements, Modric kept his standard cool by saying,”It was fantastic, one of the best of my career, on a collective and individual level. I am very satisfied with what I did with my club, my country and, of course, to have won individual awards like The Best and the award for the best player at the World Cup.”
Now the attention will be turning to the 2018 Ballon d’Or, and we’re pretty sure that Modric has high chances of getting his hands on that award too. So make sure to bet with providers of internet betting in Croatia on him collecting the prestigious golden ball.
