A lucky punter from Malta takes British sportsbook for just under EUR 700K spending less than EUR 1
A 41-year-old football fan from a tiny village in Malta has shown the betting community that it’s not necessary to be a high roller and bet only large amounts of money to still win big. The lucky punter bet just under 1 Euro and score a massive win of EUR 683,739.88 with William Hill, operating under British gambling laws.
It was Glen Johnson’s late winner against Chelsea that ensured the record-setting odds of 683,738/1 from William Hill. Our hero from Malta has placed an accumulator bet of just EUR 1 on nineteen football outcomes, eighteen of which have already won by the time Chelsea v Liverpool match entered the final stages.
This left the whole “giant” wager of EUR 1 riding on the score of the last remaining English Premier League match. Before the start of the much anticipated game, Liverpool were underdogs with 7/2 odds, but our lucky punter believed that they can overpower the “Blues”, and boy was he right.
William Hill spokesperson, Graham Sharpe, told United Kingdom gambling news: “We cannot recall any punter winning either this much on an accumulator, or landing such stratospheric odds- even though he wasn’t a Liverpool fan before, he tells us he is now!”
He went on to add: “Football punters were already celebrating the biggest winning weekend in living memory as all the best fancied teams in the Premier League, Championship, Leagues One and Two, Blue Square, SPL and William Hill Scottish Cup turned out to be winners.”
“This late winner in the final game of the weekend left us feeling about as cheerful as under-pressure Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas. The weekend as a whole was football betting’s equivalent of racing’s Dettori day in 1996, when Frankie rode all seven winners at Ascot, costing the industry almost GBP 50 million,” the spokesperson continued.
He concluded by saying: “Punters backing long-odds accumulative bets like the one described here were the biggest winners, most of them collecting four and five figure sums from modest stakes.”
Betting on English Premier League is extremely popular at online sportsbooks in United Kingdom, where football action is hot on and off the pitch and lives of prominent footballers is closely followed by media and fans.
