Casinos in Las Vegas were able to cut a deal with employee unions, right before a planned strike was set to commence.
Only hours before a scheduled protest in Las Vegas, union representatives were able to reach an agreement with the respective companies in the city.
Culinary and bartender unions agreed to a five-year deal with the Golden Gate, and will not proceed with strike plans at the ground. Later on, the unions managed to secure deals with other four casinos: Four Queens, Binion’s, Plaza and Las Vegas Club.
Secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union, Geoconda Arguello-Kline, announced that he is pleased with the deals and highlighted that they represent a fair value for everyone involved, as per US gambling laws.
“We are pleased that we have settled new contracts with our major employers that will allow union members to have an opportunity to provide for their families through hard work under a fair contract.”
Request for certain provisions
Previously, agreements were reached with other downtown casinos, among which are: The D, Golden Nugget, Fremont, Main Street Station and El Cortez.
The employees will have the chance to vote on the settlements, which will show whether or not they will ratify the deal. If agreed, then the contracts would be retroactive to June 1, 2013, when the last contracts expired.
Gambling news reports that the general consensus was a call for an increase in wages for the workers, while also addressing the need for more flexible working hours and keeping health care costs at the same level.
