Brignone leads the overall gs standing ahead of Bassino and Shiffrin
The women’s 2020-21 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup will continue this weekend in Slovenia with two giant slalom races. Italian Federica Brignone leads the discipline’s overall standing after three events. But another Italian skier, Marta Bassino is the top favorite in the Kranjska Gora giant slalom odds.
This year Maribor should have hosted the Slovenian Alpine Ski World Cup event. But due to the lack of snow, the race was moved to last year’s location, Kranjska Gora. Now organizers face a new challenge, too much snow on the Podkoren slopes which might not be hard enough for ski racing. Only three giant slalom races have been held this season yet. As the previous race in Semmering, Austria was cancelled due to bad weather. Hopefully the Golden Fox race can be held this weekend and athletes can continue to compete for the trophy. In last year’s race New Zealander Alice Robinson won the GS event ahead of Slovakian Petra Vlhova. Both of them can feature in the top again along with the best Italian skiers.
Kranjska Gora giant slalom odds favor Bassino to win
Italian Federica Brignone is leading the overall giant slalom standing but only five points ahead of her compatriot, Marta Bassino. Online sportsbooks in Slovenia offer Bassino the smallest odds, 3.24 to win this year. The 24-year-old has already won two giant slalom races and seems to be in great form this season. She also finished second in the Super-G event last weekend in St Anton only 0.16 seconds behind the winner, Lara Gut-Behrami. Bassino was fifth in Slovenia last year, but has every chance to get a better result in 2021.
One of her biggest rivals can be the US champion Mikaela Shiffrin who has odds of 5.00 in the Kranjska Gora giant slalom odds. Shiffrin has also won a giant slalom race this season in Courchevel. It was her first victory since last January after her long break and injuries. She is currently in third place in the GS overall standing and will aim for a great result in the next race. Especially as she has already won in Slovenia in 2018 and finished as a runner-up in 2019.
Brignone and Vlhova can also perform well
Petra Vlhova is having a superb season so far after she is leading the overall standing. But giant slalom is not her strongest point, even though she has two podium finishes in the discipline so far. The Slovakian skier won the race in Kranjska Gora in 2019 ahead of Shiffrin, so definitely belongs to the main favorites. Her odds is 6.00 on 22bet to get her fifth victory of the season.
Online gambling sites in Slovenia also mention the current GS overall leader, Federica Brignone with the odds of 8.00. The 2020 overall and giant slalom world cup winner is not as convincing as last season, but still leads in her favorite discipline. She got two second-place finishes so far but has to perform well again to keep her lead. Better than last year when she only finished in 8th place. While the 2020 winner, Alice Robinson has the odds of 17.00 to repeat her previous result. The young athlete has only finished one GS race this season, so needs a big improvement to stand on the podium again.
