The long awards season is kicking off with the 2020 Gotham Awards as the first stop. The ceremony is taking place on 11 January 2020 with five films to likely win one or more of the top accolades. The main contenders are “First Cow” and “Nomadland”, as per Gotham Awards 2020 odds.
Gotham Awards backed by the Independent Film Project (IFP) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It usually takes place on the first Monday after Thanksgiving in its regular venue, New York’s Cipriani Wall Street. However, like everything else that did not go according to plan in 2020, Gothams faces over a month of delay. It was also rearranged into a hybrid format with virtual interactive tables.
As online sportsbook news in the United States reported, Gotham winners usually overlap with Oscar winners. Last year, for example, Adam Driver, Awkwafina, Ethan Hawke, and Toni Collette all had Oscar momentum following the Gothams. This year the competition is tough as the last year, according to Gotham Awards 2020 odds. But the “First Cow” and “Nomadland” will most likely win at least one award.
“First Cow” leads with four nods
Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” leads at Gotham Awards 2020 odds with four nods. It is no surprise as Reichardt produced the film brilliantly. It takes us to the nascent era of the American civilization in the 19th century. The story follows two young men who become unlikely allies in a barren land. They roam the natural splendors of the Pacific Northwest giving some great aspects of a deconstructed American identity.
As 22BET Sportsbook suggests, “First Cow” is the second favorite with +170 odds to win the Best Feature. The film is the top favorite with a value of -400 to win the Best Screenplay. Besides, the starring figures John Magaro stands at +500 for Best Actor and Orion Lee +900 for the Breakthrough Actor.
“Nomadland” top favorite for the Best Feature
The American drama film directed by Chloe Zhao is based on a non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twentieth-First Century. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion. It also won the people’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“Nomadland” is in a tight contest with “First Cow” to win the Best Feature with a value of -200. Its starring actress Frances McDormand is also the favorite to win the Best Actress Award with -286 odds.
Boseman leads for the Best Actor
Chadwick Boseman who died in August at the age of 43 after a secret battle with colon cancer has been nominated the Best Actor. His nomination is for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which marks his final screen appearance. The Gotham Awards 2020 odds are -229 for Boseman to be named as the Best Actor.
Gotham Awards 2020 odds on Kingsley Ben-Adir
Kingsley Ben-Adir received a nod for his role in “One Night in Miami” directed by Regina King. Many consider the film as a formidable debut for King who won Oscars and Emmy for her acting. Kingsley plays the role of Malcom X. He was highly praised with +110 odds to likely the Breakthrough Actor Award.
“I’m Thinking of Ending Things”
The brilliant existential Netflix drama is directed by Charlie Kaufman. Many perceive the film as a radical departure from Kaufman’s previous work. It is based on Iain Reid’s novel which delves into deeper thoughts of memory, misery, and mortality. According to the online sportsbooks in the United States, the starring character Jesse Plemons has a chance to win the Best Actor with +1600 odds. Besides, Jessie Buckley might win the Best actress accolade with a value of +900.
