About Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is an upcoming movie based on the same-name table game. If you didn’t know, Dungeons & Dragons has been one of the most popular role-playing activities for tabletop game fans since the 1970s. It was even referenced in Hollywood movies, TV series, and video games, and finally got a version for big screens. The Dungeons and Dragons movie will premiere on March 31, 2023. It means that the film skips the movie awards calendar 2023 and will compete for awards next year, if positively accepted.

Currently, there are some doubts about the movie and its award & box office success. Dungeons and Dragons was directed by Jonathan Goldstein, who has previously directed comedies like Vacation and Game Night and a couple of short films. Honor Among Thieves is his third feature, but with the biggest budget of $151 million. Following online sportsbooks in Australia, such a big budget can negatively impact final box office results, but we’ll talk about it later.

The Dungeons and Dragons cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith. Hugh Grant, who has recently become a meme due to his interview at the Oscars, is back on big screens as the antagonist. Other cast members include Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Daisy Head.

Dungeons and Dragons opening weekend at the box office

Although Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will premiere at the end of March, it was already shown at South by Southwest. Hence, we can take a look at the movie ratings to have clearer Dungeons & Dragons opening weekend expectations and total box office predictions.

Following Metacritic, Dungeons and Dragons has 77%, which is a good result for a game-based movie. The fantasy comedy also scored 89% ”fresh” reviews from critics at RottenTomatoes. They called the feature “a good-spirited comedy” and praised it for “having an emotional core” and “treating the genre properly”. The latter is a rare thing for fantasy movies nowadays.

Taking reviews into account, box office predictions look decent at 22Bet. The bookmaker predicts that Dungeons and Dragons will start with at least $27 million at the opening weekend. If the audience score will be as good as critics’, the film has all chances to become the highest-grossing premiere in 2023 so far.

Most online betting sites in Australia don’t risk to make the total box office predictions about Dungeons and Dragons. Fantasy movies, especially ones based on games, are a sensitive topic for the public. However, some bookies state that the film can become one of the most successful premieres in 2023. Together with Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Dungeons and Dragons can easily enter the top 10 this year.
