Doyle Brunson Says WSOP Main Event Is “Too Damn Long”

Poker legend Doyle Brunson decided to skip this year’s Main Event at the WSOP.

A few days ago, a tweet from Doyle Brunson announced that the poker veteran would be retiring from the 2014 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. The 80-year-old poker legend and 10-time bracelet winner said the reason why he won’t show up at the tournament is that, at his age, the “hours are just too damn long”.

The tournament is a very demanding race, requiring players to spend 12 hours per day in the same American poker room. Those who want to make it to the final table have to keep this up for more than a week.

Only “retiring” from WSOP

Brunson finished 408th at the 2013 WSOP. Last year’s gambling news reported that it was then that people first started to anticipate the veteran’s retirement.

Before the 2013 WSOP started, he said he was going to skip the entire event. Later on e decided to join the Main Event, but by the end of the tournament he told reporters that playing there had made him feel like he had been run over by a truck.

While tournaments might not be his thing anymore, Brunson is far from retiring from poker altogether. The veteran played in the $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship this summer, a more modest event which drew around 100 participants.
