Danish Online Gambling Industry Makes Financial Recovery, Despite Decline in Poker Profits

The online gambling industry in Denmark has made progress in 2013, with revenues reaching almost EUR 320 million.

After 2012 Danish gambling laws offered a framework for the licensing and development of the online casino market, the industry has seen a slow and unimpressive growth. Last year meant an 8% increase for the local internet gambling industry.

Poker sites are still declining, but things are starting to look better for online casinos in Denmark. According to information published by the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden), last year’s total gross gaming revenue has reached an impressive EUR 318.3 million in 2013. The industry achieved its record profits in the last quarter of 2013.

Good results for a limited market

Considering that only gamblers who are physically located within the borders of the country are allowed to play online poker in Denmark, the results are quite impressive. The country only has a population of 5.6 million people, so the online poker market is very small.

At the moment, the most popular online gambling sites in Denmark are PokerStars, bwin.party, Ladbrookes and bet365. Under the country’s gambling legislation, online operators are required to pay a 20% tax to the state. The rate is quite high, but still more convenient than in other European states, such as France.
