You Can Bet on Meryl Streep to Win Her 4th Oscar

Meryl Streep has the most nominations in the history of the Academy Awards but has had less luck actually bringing the award home. (In more senses than one, as she is rumored to have forgotten her first statuette on a toilet seat after the ceremony in 1980.) However, gamblers are betting on Meryl Streep to end her Oscar drought very soon.
Meryl Streep is one of the most respected actresses of our time and has received countless awards. Surprisingly, she has converted only 3 of her 21 Oscar nominations into wins:
- Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer (1980)
- Best Actress for Sophie’s Choice (1983)
- Best Actress for Iron Lady (2012)
However, online sportsbook news sites in the US suggest that she may receive her next golden statuette in the near future.
Where can you bet on Meryl Streep?
Bwin Sports opened a bet on Meryl Streep to win her fourth Academy Award before the end of 2020. As the ceremony is held every February, this means that punters will receive the 4.00 rewards if the actress collects another Oscar statuette in the next two years.
It is imaginable that her next Academy Award will be in the Best Supporting Actress category, as she did not play the lead in her latest movies. But exactly which of her recent roles could make Oscar history?
For which movies could she win an Academy Award?
Streep played a brief but moving role in the wildly successful sequel to Mamma Mia. Audiences will soon see her in another musical, Mary Poppins Returns, which will be released this year right before Christmas. It is, unfortunately, an underdog in the contest for the Best Picture: the best online betting sites in the United States set the movie’s odds at 67.00. That, however, does not seal the fate of Streep’s performance. After all, Iron Lady was met with mixed reviews, and Streep’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher still brought an Academy Award to her.
That being said, another upcoming title, Little Women (a new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel) seems to have bigger Oscar potential. Streep plays judgmental and rich widow Aunt March, a surprising role, and the Academy Award Committee will certainly appreciate her willingness to go in unexpected directions instead of settling for predictable characters. Little Women’s release date in the US will be Dec 25, 2019.
Streep is also involved in Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat. The film is currently in pre-production. It might not get shot in time to be qualified for the 2020 Academy Awards, but if the workaholic director does finish it quickly, it may double Streep’s chances.
According to The Laundromat’s plot summary on IMDB, the story “follows a group of journalists who take part in unearthing 11.5 million files, linking the world’s most powerful political figures to secret banking accounts to avoid taxes.” The subject matter is similar to that of The Post, the film that brought the actress her latest Oscar nomination.
