Bulgaria has set the ball in motion for a new testing laboratory to aid online casinos, sportsbetting and poker operators that are looking to gain a foothold in the country’s market.

Things have never been easy in Bulgaria where online gambling and Bulgarian gambling laws are concerned. The high taxation and internet blacklist made Bulgaria an unattractive market for the online gambling community, but it looks like things are changing in the Balkan country.

The online gambling testing and monitoring company eCOGRA has received accreditation from the Bulgarian State Gambling Commission (SGC) to act as a testing ground for online gambling sites in Bulgaria.

eCOGRA submitted to the Bulgarian SGC’s accreditation program to cater to the demands from operators that are interested entering the Bulgarian market now that the taxation laws are changing, where the high 15% tax rate has been reduced to a more reasonable one.

“Our application followed interest expressed by some of the industry’s leading software suppliers and operators who are clients of eCOGRA and are now expressing interest in obtaining a Bulgarian license,” said Tex Rees, the director at eCOGRA.

“This followed the change by the Bulgarian government to a tax based on gross gaming revenue, and strict but more practical technical and other operating requirements.”

At present, the online market in Bulgaria has been poor to date, but it looks like the country working on catching up in the online gambling world.
