The favorites

Some of the participating nations are already regarded as the favorites to win the crown at a variety of online sportsbooks in the United States. Naturally, the hosts, Brazil are the number one on everyone’s list. Las Vegas bookies are giving Brazil 3/1 odds to become 6-time champions.

If Brazil does win, they will become the first host nation to do so at home since majestic France won the title in 1998. Brazil traditionally has an array of famous and capable players, this year most eyes will be on Neymar, a young forward who’s enjoying his first season in Barcelona.

Argentina is the second in line to win the World Cup title. Lionel Messi and Co will be definitely looking to upset the mighty Brazilians on their home turf. Argentina has only one World Cup title, won back in 1978, when they hosted the championship. Their chances are valued with a 9/2 early betting line at a variety of sportsbooks.

The last two decades haven’t been good for Argentina, but since the upcoming tournament will be held in South America, it might be the edge they need to take down European elite teams. However, there’s still the long-standing rivalry with Brazil, which can stand in their way.

The reigning champions, Spain, are actually fourth in line with 7/1 odds compared to a line of 5/1 for Germany. Spain is strong and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they were to retain the crown. As for the Germans – they haven’t placed below third during the last three World Cups, so maybe it will be their year to go one step further.

But then again, Brazil and Argentina have been drawn into far easier groups than the European favorites. And most of the Spanish and German players have very limited if any experience of playing in South America.

What about the rest

There are 32 teams in the final stage of the 2014 World Cup. Eighteen of them have very long odds of 100/1 and longer to win the competition. USA belongs to that group with 200/1 odds to win the World Cup. Back in 2006 the Americans failed to win a single match, but improved a lot already in 2010 making it out of the group, but losing out to Ghana in the Round of 16. Ghana has again been draw together with USA, and it will be interesting to watch the revenge match.

Jurgen Klinsmann has done a fantastic job with team USA, which is led by Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley. The goalie, Tim Howard, is considered by many experts to be one of the best English Premier League goalkeepers.

As for England themselves, they might not be the favorites with only 28/1 odds to win, but they are always a team to look out for. The Three Lions haven’t won since home World Cup back in 1966. Their current group is a toughie, but fans will surely enjoy exciting matches against Uruguay and Italy. Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney are regarded as the main goalscorer hopes, since Theo Walcott picked up an injury back in January and isn’t expected to travel to Brazil.

The least favorite teams to win this year are Costa Rica and Honduras with 5000/1 odds each, while Greece is the worst of the Europeans at 300/1 odds.
