Despite paying the back taxes, bwin party, BetSafe, BetVictor Betsson and many other well-known brands were included in the of blacklist of sportsbooks in Romania.
bwin party was blacklisted by the National Office for Gambling of Romania. Even though bwin party has already paid GBP 10 million in back taxes, they still made the list of blacklisted online sportsbooks in Romania. They’re not the only big name on the list. BetSafe, BetVictor, Betsson and William Hill and many other well-known bookmaker and casino sites are included. Accordingly, the problem is that they should’ve suspended their services until an official approval from the authorities.
What’s happening with sportsbooks in Romania?
This step might cause some serious troubles not only for sports betting sites in Romania but for players too. The home-page on the site of the National Office for Gambling of Romania states that ”the participation of individuals (natural persons) on Romanian territory in remote gambling activities […] that have not been authorized by the ONJN, constitutes an infraction punishable with a fine of RON 5.000 to RON 10.000”
The new Romanian gambling laws were introduced in May, 2015. The Romanian Parliament approved a new ordinance that is more attractive to foreign sportsbook and casino operators. Back then, it was already stated that the operators will be required to apply for a new license. This is still less strict than the previous laws that requested the operators to establish headquarters in Romania.
Expectations towards casinos and sportsbooks in Romania
In May, it was revealed that operators who previously profited from the country will have to pay back taxes of 20%. After calculating and informing the operators about the required payments, they have 90 day to provide documents and sort it out. After this, they can officially apply for a new gambling license in Romania.
