Blackjack Types Explained: American Blackjack

Also known as the Classic Blackjack, the American Blackjack is one of the most popular blackjack variants of the game. The American Blackjack rules are different from one casino to another; therefore, explaining this type of blackjack is not straightforward. Although the basic rules apply everywhere, you will find minor differences depending on which casino you decide to play at. For instance, Blackjack rules at the Atlantic City differ from rules at Las Vegas Casino. Make sure to understand the rules of the casino you are going to play at. Let us focus on explaining the blackjack type played at the Las Vegas Casino.

In this type of Blackjack, four decks of cards are used to play the game. Throughout the game, the players may double down on two cards even after splitting. Although players can split up to 3 times, the aces can only be split once. Also, splitting an Ace on 21 does not count as a blackjack. Finally, in this type of blackjack, the deal stands soft on 17 and peeks on 10s, aces, and faces for blackjack.

Blackjack Types Explained: European Blackjack

Another popular blackjack variant is the European blackjack from which the American type developed from. It is quite similar to the classic variant that you would find in most casinos, but with minor rule differences. There are more limitations on the European Blackjack in comparison with the American one. For instance, the dealer gets the hole card after the player decides to choose how the cards are dealt to them. In this variant, the player wins if they have a blackjack except if the dealer also has one. In this case, the game goes to a push. Also, unlike the classical variant, the dealer cannot peek for a blackjack in the middle of the game. Finally, another difference is that players split once only, and may double down on cards with a value of 9,10, or 11.

If a player or the dealer goes over 21, they automatically lose because this a “bust”. On the other hand, if a player is still under 21, they can decide on one of the following options:

1) Hit: which is asking the dealer for another card

2) Stand: keeps his hand and does not get a new card

3) Double down: getting another card while doubling the original card

4) Split: the player can split his hand into two hands

5) Surrender: the player quits and keeps half of his wager

Blackjack Types Explained: Spanish Blackjack

Introduced in 1995, Spanish Blackjack or Spanish 21 can be played with up to eight decks of cards. However, all cards with a value of ten are removed from the deck. In this variant, the player wins if he/she has a 21 regardless of what the dealer has. Yet, the dealer has the right to peek at the hole card and wins if he/she gets a blackjack or a 21. Other general rules of the Spanish Blackjack are very similar to the classic blackjack, so it will be very easy to learn this variant. On the other hand, try to avoid playing it when other variant options are around. The removal of the cards with values of ten significantly increase the house edge over the players.

Vegas Strip Blackjack Is Popular In Online Gambling

Our last pick for blackjack types explained list is the Vegas Strip Blackjack. This variant is the most popular variant on online gambling sites in the US. Like other blackjack variants, the goal is to beat the dealer with a hand that is worth more than the dealer’s without going over 21. The game is played using four decks of cards. In this variant, the dealer stands soft on 17 and has the right to peek at the hole card mid-game. Also, players may split up to three times and can double down after splitting. However, aces can be split only once, and one card only is allowed to be taken to split aces. Also, players could split face cards such as the queen or king. Finally, 21 on split aces is not considered a blackjack, so never make this mistake while playing this variant.
