Betfair and Eurofootball Enter Bulgaria’s Online Gambling Market

Betfair and Eurofootball are now authorized to accept online sports wagers from Bulgarian players.

After local authorities brought changes to Bulgarian gambling laws to allow online casinos and poker sites, the European state has started to welcome major operators to the newly opened market. The State Gambling Commission announced that two other gambling companies – Betfair and Eurofootball – have received approval, offering local players with new opportunities to bet on sports in Bulgaria.

As of this week, Betfair’s Bulgarian-version website is authorized to accept wagers on sports, in addition to bets on horse and dog races. In addition, the licensing terms specify that the website may also offer virtual casino games. Eurofootball is another virtual sportsbook licensed to operate in Bulgaria. The online operator accepts wagers on sports events, as well as horse and dog races.

PokerStars breaks the ice

Bulgaria handed out its first online gambling license last September and another important step was taken earlier this month, when PokerStars became the country’s first legal online poker site.

Eric Hollreiser, head of corporate communications for PokerStars, told reporters: “Bulgaria is full of promise. Poker is extremely popular in the country and recently we have seen some notable results from Bulgarian players including Dimitar Danchev, who won the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event for $1,859,000.”

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian gambling regulator has also expanded its blacklist by including online services such as Cardbet, Bookmaker, Betin7, Intragame and Stargames.
