It is not a mistake. Joker got a nomination for the 2020 Golden Raspberry Award in a special category, which was most probably created to add the most talked-about film of the year to the “anti-Oscars”. You can even bet on Joker to win Razzies as the film has all the chances to take the prize.
This year, the Razzies added an old-new nomination to the traditional list of its categories. “Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property” aims to reward films that show too much violence. The nomination was first created in 1998, but was removed from the Razzies one year later. It is back in 2020, but why?
According to online sportsbooks in the US, there are 5 films in the shortlist of this weird nomination. They are Hellboy, Rambo 5, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, Dragged Across Concrete, and Joker. The DC comics directed by Todd Phillips looks like a diamond among glass here, but it is also the main favorite to win the award with 3.25 odds. So, why will one of the best pictures of 2019 take the Razzie?
Bet on Joker to win Razzies for its popularity
The old-new nomination includes 4 truly bad films with low ratings… and Joker. However, the film by Todd Phillips received an appraisal from both critics and the audience. It grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and became the most successful DC comics ever. It earned 11 nominations for the Academy Awards and won two of them. Obviously, this film is not as bad as the new Hellboy, so why should it receive the Razzie?
The main reason why you should bet on Joker to win Razzies is… its popularity. Bovada Sportsbook gave the film good odds to take the award due to the bombshell effect it caused last year. Probably, Joker even left behind Avengers: Endgame by a number of discussions. However, this is not the only reason it drew the Razzies’ attention. There’s really a lot of violence – justified violence – unlike needless cruelty in The Haunting of Sharon Tate. However, the realistic portraying of Joker’s early life played against the movie and brought it the Razzies nomination.
Do the Razzies just want some hype?
Certainly, they do. Once the Razzies nominations were out, many film fans suggested that the special nomination was got back in order to nominate and reward Joker with the “anti-Oscar”. To be honest, few people show interest in the Razzies as much as in the prestigious film awards. Therefore, an attempt to depreciate such a big box-office hit plus an Academy Award winner will definitely bring the public’s attention. It has already worked out, so the best decision to keep people’s attention would be to give Joker the prize. Just to make the audience talk about it.
