With the latest allegations on bullying and sexual harassment in the British Parliament, the current Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow faces great pressure to stand down. If he quits, we opt for betting on the next Speaker of the House to be either the Deputy Lindsay Hoyle or Labour MP Harriet Harman.

According to online sportsbook news in the UK, the independent report that came out in October found 200 allegations of bullying and sexual harassment in British Parliament. Online sportsbooks in the UK have reported that many MPs have been calling for John Bercow’s resignation.

Bercow was planning to stay until the next General Election in 2022. But, if he succumbs to the pressure, four candidates will probably put their names forward:

  1. Lindsay Hoyle
  2. Harriet Harman
  3. Jacob Rees-Mogg
  4. Chris Bryant.

Currently, Hoyle and Harman are the safe picks when betting on the next Speaker of the House and here is why.

1. Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle is the Favourite

Lindsay Hoyle has been Deputy Speaker since 2010. He has good experience of the office’s duties. He does not face any kind of controversy and that will be an advantage for this independent role at the Commons.

Besides, he has a good majority in Chorley, a Labour heartland. His odds are the best to be elected as a Speaker. That’s because, there are no signs for Hoyle to face a loss in the race. Therefore, do not hesitate to select him when betting on the next Speaker of the House.

2. Harriet Harman the Longest Serving Female MP

The former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman is the longest continuously serving female MP; she entered the House of Commons in 1982. Throughout the years, she has built up a strong resume and amassed support from many prominent parliamentarians.

Harman has also revealed that she will put her name forward when the current Speaker John Bercow stands down. If Deputy Hoyle fails to be elected, MP Harman will certainly become the front-runner.

3. Chris Bryant to be the First Gay Speaker

Bryant was a priest until 1991.

The leading Labour backbencher, Chris Bryant, has been serving as MP for Rhondda since the 2001 General Elections. He gave a strong indication that he will join the battle to become the next Speaker of the House.

Bryant was a priest until 1991, but then he decided that staying in the church and being openly gay were not compatible for him. He might have a chance to be the first gay Speaker of the House if British Parliament is ready for that, with mid-tear odds at the bookies.

4. The Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg

According to the best online betting sites in the UK, the conservative MP for North East Somerset Jacob Rees-Mogg is the least favourite candidate. His odds are rather bad to be the next Speaker. The reason behind that are his conservative views and his strong voice for Brexiteers.

Rees-Mogg would probably find the role of being impartial difficult. Besides, he is a Tory and the convention says the next speaker should be opposite to the last one, which means a Labour MP this time.
