According to online sportsbook news in Ireland, two members of the Labour Party, Mick Duff and Martina Genocky resigned in September. They intended it to be a wakeup call for the Party to make substantial change in its leadership. Their resignation came after a number of councilors called for Mr Howlin to step down.
Although, Brendan expressed no intention to do so, the pressure is growing. Therefore, the Labour Party might need a new leader to fight for its life in the next general election. Here are the profiles of the expected candidates Alan Kelly, Jan O’Sullivan, and Sean Sherlock. Please, keep in mind that you can place a bet on the next Irish Labour leader only until December 31, 2019.
Alan Kelly the Opposition Leader within Labour Party
What does TD stand for?
Teachta Dála (TD) is a member of the lower house of the Irish Parliament.
According to online sportsbook news in Ireland, Alan Kelly is the leader of opposition within the Labour Party. He publicly criticized Mr Howlin and endorsed the councilors who raised their voices for Howlin’s resignation. Furthermore, Kelly has already confirmed his intention to run for leadership at the next available opportunity.
As of now, Alan Kelly is one of the favourites to become the next Irish Labour leader with odds at 3.74. He tried to run for the leadership in 2016 when Joan Burton gave her resignation, but he failed to get the support from a TD. However, the internal election rules have changed and he can have a chance to win as soon as he gets the support of five constituency councils.
Jan O’Sullivan Served Three Ministerial Positions
Jan O’Sullivan represents the constituency of Limerick City, since 1998. Also, she was serving in a number of ministerial positions for the Labour Party before 2016, including
- Minister for Trade and Development
- Minister for Housing and Planning
- Minister for Education.
She has gained lots of popularity with the Labour Party especially after her success in creating more teaching jobs.
In 2016, Jan O’Sullivan considered running for the leadership position, but eventually pulled out of the race. If she decides to replace Mr Howlin, she might have a good chance to get the internal support from the majority of councilors with odds at 3.74.
Sean Sherlock Considered Running in 2016
Sean Sherlock was also one of the Labour Party members who considered running for the leadership position in 2016. He is the former mayor of his hometown Mallow. He was first elected to the Dail in 2007 as a TD for the Cork East constituency.
Sherlock has served as Minister for the Department of Jobs in 2011 to 2014 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2014 to 2016. He is popular in the Party, and he would put a good fight against the other candidates. The odds are 6.5 for Sherlock if you consider selecting him when betting on the next Irish Labour leader.
