  • The Lion King might become the most successful film ever at the box office
  • Jon Favreau to take CGI to a whole new level in this new version
  • The audiences’ excitement will fill the American theaters in the first weekend

Jon Favreau’s The Lion King will be released on the 19th of July. After the release of the trailer, everyone’s expectations are very high. And bookmakers are already wondering how will the film perform in the box office. This way, you can already place your bet on The Lion King.

This won’t be Jon Favreau’s first time directing a Disney classic. In 2016, the director released the live action/GCI remake of The Jungle Book, based on the animation film from 1967. The film received widespread acclaim from critics. And most importantly, it won many accolades for its visual effects, including an Academy Award. This is why we have reasons to think Favreau will succeed in this so expected new film. According to online sportsbooks in the United States, the film can become the most profitable of all time.

The Lion King comes after the success of live-action remakes of Disney’s classics, such as Maleficent, Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast.

Bet on the Lion King

  • to be the highest grossing movie of all time: +1000
  • the remake to generate less income than the original version: +500
  • the remake to generate more incomem than the original version: -1000

Jon Favreau’s The Lion King to become the highest-grossing film of all time

In 1994, The Lion King became the 2nd highest-grossing film of all time. Needless to say, it was also the highest-grossing film of the year and the most profitable animation ever. Now, after the first teaser’s release, the film broke Disney’s record as the most watched trailer. In less than 24 hours, it gathered 224.6 million views globally.

Of course, the success of the new film is also depending on Jon Favreau’s directing of the story. Favreau stated he wants to go further and enhance the powers of the virtual technology used in The Jungle Book. And during the Oscars, Disney released a new trailer. It was visible that the team is working hard to improve the visuals.

There were many adjustments to lightning and contrasts, bringing to life some of the emotional depth the first hyperrealistic trailer seemed to lack. And, while we are still to see if the production solved some of the unconvincing movements of The Jungle Book, there were hints that they might be on a good way and that they will carefully portray the animals’ body language.

So far, we know that Favreau’s film will recreate some of the most iconic shots with a photorealistic approach. This will follow Disney’s strategy of being faithful to its remakes which stirs up nostalgic feelings among fans.

Earlier this year we made our predictions for the highest-grossing film of 2019 in the UK. Even though Frozen is likely to earn the title, The Lion King can definitely enjoy a huge success worldwide. Especially because this time, it won’t be just the young generations rushing to get their tickets, but also the ones that grew up watching it.

This way, at 22BET Sportsbook, The Lion King’s odds of becoming the biggest hit of all time are +1000.

The Lion King will make more money in the US now than in 1994

As online sportsbook news sites in the United States report, record-breaking films marked the recent years in the box office. Especially compared to the 90s – even though the ticket’s price suffered from inflation – numbers have grown considerably. This is why The Lion King is very likely to do better in the first weekend than its predecessor in the USA.

This is especially curious in our increasingly streamed-based society. The tendency is that the number of moviegoers will decrease. Hence, the success of last year’s box office came as a surprise to the industry.

Hollywood’s creativity never dies

In 1994, the animated version of The Lion King made $622,277 in the first week, the equivalent of $1,344,300 in 2019. Even with the adjustments, this was not so much when compared to The Jungle Book’s performance in 2016. In its first week, the film made $130,674,426 at the domestic box-office.

And this becomes even more interesting along with the fact that the 1967 film had more success in the box office. In total, the film made $73,741,048 in the USA, which would be $506,981,800 this year, while the new version only earned $364,001,123.

This is why that, no matter what happens to the final result of the film, chances are that The Lion King (-1000) will make more money in the first week than the 1994 version. However, you can also bet on the contrary. The odds of the new version to make less in the box-office are +500 at 22BET Sportsbook.
