Bet On Gun Runner To Win The Breeders Cup Classic

Technically the Triple Crown of US horse racing consists of three races famous around the world. The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes and was last earned by American Pharoah. However there is a fourth race that many consider their equal, and this year that roving race is being held at Del Mar, but the question is; Should you bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic? We take a look at the field and the odds.
- Is a bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic worth it at just 7/4?
- Can Arrogate still win despite slipping to 3/1?
- Will West Coast barge through the field to win at those 9/2 odd from Bet365?
- Should you wager that Collected at 7/1 is this year’s dark horse winner?
A bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic might not earn you a fortune, unless you’re prepared to stake one, at only 7/4 over on Bet365 but the way those odds have tightened up you’d have to believe the bookies know something the rest of us don’t. Sure the Steven Asmussen trained steed did romp home to win the Woodward Stakes just last month, and the Whitney and Stephen Foster Handicaps in the two months prior to that, but if you like to bet on sports in the US, there are other wagers.
Sure, you will have to look past Gun Runner’s excellent form to be comfortable placing them, but then what’s life without a little risk? And just what risk can backing Arrogate or West Coast be in a race that is always hard to predict? West Coast is coming in off the back of five wins on the trot, including the recent Pennsylvania Derby and trainer Bob Baffert will be expecting big things of this three year old colt, as should you if you choose to back it over a bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic.
Will Arrogate Win The Breeders Cup Classic Again?
Bet365 give West Coast 9/2 to win, but give Arrogate a slightly shorter 3/1 despite it’s recent form not reflecting the winning ways that saw it take wins at The Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup earlier this year and indeed at the Breeders Cup Classic in 2016. Winning the race twice on the bounce might be asking a lot, but you never know and if you’re not going to bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic then taking advantage of US gambling laws to back either of these two is no bad choice at all.
The unpredictability of the race means that Collected, currently standing at 7/1 at Bet365, is likewise not an irrationally optimistic wager. The four year old colt has won the Pacific Classic (where notably it beat Arrogate into second place), Precisionist Stakes, Californian Stakes and Santana Mile all this year and may well surprise anyone who has put a bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic with it’s stamina. But what if you’re unsure about an on-the-nose bet and want something a little each-way?

Big races like this always provide a good selection of opportunities for the place-bet crowd and Bet365 offers an exceedingly generous 16/1 on Classic Empire who came fourth in the Kentucky Derby and 2nd in the Preakness Stakes earlier this year and could easily slip itself into third place on the day. Of course at the 20/1 point there are a gaggle of choices if you’ve decided to eschew a bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic and are hoping US gambling news after the race is of a complete upset.
Keen Ice, Mor Spirit, Mubttaahij, Good Samaritan and Shaman Ghost all get that same 20/1 chance at Bet365 and would be send shockwaves through the racing world if any of them won, and whilst Irish War Cry and Always Dreaming at long shots at 66/1 it’s Girvin at 150/1 who is the outsider at the tail end of a massively talented field. So if you think a bet on Gun Runner to win the Breeders Cup Classic is a tad dull, just remember there are plenty of other horses out there to back and any of them could win.
