Employees of the Ladbrokes shop on Yorkshire Street were the victims of a robbery last night, with one of them suffering a broken arm.
Betting shops seem to be in the gambling news for all the wrong reasons lately. Last night was more of the same, as two Ladbrokes employee employees had just closed shop for the evening on Yorkshire Street when they heard a loud bang come from outside.
Seconds later three hooded men burst through the door, one of whom was wielding an axe. The terrified workers attempted to flee through the back of the shop but were caught and ordered to hand over the keys to the safe.
While betting shops are losing business to online sportsbooks in the UK, the location reportedly held a substantial amount of cash.
The robbers then left through the front door and ran along Yorkshire Street. A red Vauxhall Calibra was found abandoned nearby amid speculation that it was used by the robbers. One employee suffered a broken arm during the incident.
Perpetrators still at large
The three men have not yet been caught by police. Detective Inspector Bev Foster asked knowledgeable persons to come forward with information:
“I would ask anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the robbery, or anyone who may have seen the offenders running away from the scene, to contact police.”
