German sportswear giant Adidas and Premier League side Arsenal are teaming up again, 25 years after last having a sponsorship association.
Commencing from the 2018/19 season, Arsenal will once again wear the three stripes of Adidas on their shirts, after the two parties agreed to a five-year sponsorship deal worth £300m, online sportsbook news report.
Adidas will take over from their German competitors Puma at the end of the current campaign, who have produced Arsenal’s kit from the 2014/15 campaign. It is believed that Puma were interested in extending their deal with the North London side, but bulked at the club’s new proposed terms.
Puma will instead focus their efforts on Man City starting from 2019/20, for which privilege they’re willing to work out £50m per season to outfit the Sky Blues. That’s why their budget is limited when it comes to Arsenal, and they would rather invest in a team they think will be serial champions, thus translating to more shirt sales for them.
Adidas used to supply Arsenal’s kits between 1986 and 1994, at which point their great American rivals Nike – who just entered the football scene in Europe, a market that was dominated by Adidas for many years – took over for the next two decades, until Puma stepped in.
The Arsenal-Adidas deal will see the Emirates side net £60m per season, which puts them in the same bracket as their cross town rivals Chelsea, who are generating the same amount every campaign since signing a long-term deal with Nike in 2017. This means the two clubs are tied in second place when it comes to kit sponsorship value, only behind Man United’s staggering £100m per season deal with none other than Adidas.
Bet on Arsenal to win the Premier League outright
With 18 points to their name, they’re only 2 points behind the Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
After 8 rounds in the Premier League, the Gunners are fourth on the table – the cliché of that position is present even under new manager Unai Emery. Despite going through a shaky start at the very start of the season which saw them lose two consecutive games (against Man City and then Chelsea), Arsenal have gone on to claim nine straight victories in all competitions.
With 18 points to their name, they’re only 2 points behind the Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool – all three of the sides are on 20 points at the top of the table. By the looks of their results now, replacing Arsene Wenger after 22 years at the club seems to have been a great move, but the question now on everyone’s mind is will the Gunners manage to keep up this momentum in the long run?
Online sportsbooks in UK are giving favourite odds to Man City 4/6 (1.67) to defend their Premier League title and make it two championship triumphs in a row. Liverpool are second on the list 9/4 (3.25), while Chelsea are third favourites 8/1 (9.00).
Arsenal’s biggest rivals Tottenham are ahead of them on the odds chart 33/1 (34.00), while the Gunners themselves are fifth favourite to win the Premier League 40/1 (41.00). But with only 8 rounds behind us, things could shape up differently as the campaign goes on.
