An Illegal Singaporean Bookmaker Faces Four Years in Prison

A toothless 50-year-old Singaporean man was arrested for running an illegal bookmaking service right from the gaming floor of the one of the Singaporean casinos – Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Casino. The police arrest report was obtained by online gambling news in Singapore.

A joint investigation conducted by the renowned Casino Crime Investigation Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the recently established Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) quickly apprehended the suspect and took witness statements.

The suspect, Broken Tooth Lin, was caught when an observant hotel security officer noticed an unusual behavior pattern that fit a profile. After further observation, CID quickly spoke to the casino patrons who were approached by Broken Tooth. Within ten minutes, CID had the probable cause to place Broken Tooth Lin in custody.

CID and CRA arrest report accuses Mr. Lin of approaching long-time patrons of the Resorts World Sentosa, as the patrons were gambling, and offering them private bets in the sum above the legal limit according to Singaporean gambling laws. A private bet between two or more casino patrons is considered a very serious criminal offense under the National Betting Act.

On April 12, 2011 Broken Tooth Lin has been charged with 1 count of Acting as a Bookmaker under Section 5(3)(a) of the national Betting Act. If convicted, he will face 48 months in prison and a fine of 100,000SGD. Mr. Lee has a criminal record with one past conviction for working as a loan shark for an illegal online casino in Singapore.

Assistant Commissioner Hoong Wee Teck, of the Singaporean Police Forces as well as the Director of Criminal Investigations stated – “Police will take stern action against persons involved in illegal bookmaking activities inside the casinos. Casino patrons are also advised not to make illegal bets with illegal bookmakers as this is also an offence under the Betting Act.”
