  • Alvarez is coming off a third-round TKO over Yildirim
  • Alvarez looks to become the undisputed super middleweight
  • Saunders has a nice record, but his chances are extremely slim

The biggest fight of 2021 as of now is scheduled for 08 May between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders. The WBC, WBA, and WBO unification clash promises a very exciting show. However, as our Alvarez vs Saunders betting preview suggests, Saunders will highly unlikely stand a chance against Canelo.

The most active champion in the world among all weight classes Canelo Alvarez looks to cement his status as the No. 1 pound-for-pound. He also made it clear his next goal is to become the super-middleweight undisputed. Thus, he confirmed that he is taking down the WBO titlist Billy Joe Saunders on 08 May.

Canelo announced the fight following his quickfire stoppage over Yildirim on 27 February. According to our Alvarez vs Saunders betting preview, Saunders will likely be Canelo’s next victim rather than his challenger. Thus, it goes without saying that Canelo is the favorite, as per most online sportsbooks in Mexico. However, it is interesting to see that Saunders is not a massive underdog. Instead, he is put forward as the underdog with a slight chance to make the upset of the year.

Canelo merely is unbeatable at this point

The conqueror of four weight divisions is coming off a third-round TKO against Avni Yildirim in Miami. It is a fight that nobody gave a chance to Yildirim. But, it was mandatory and kept the Canelo active. Prior to that, Canelo beat up Callum Smith in December to win the WBA title.

It is hard to go through all Canelo’s top fights. His resume is massive and has so many great names of the current and former boxing eras. To name a few, Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Miguel Cotto, have all lost against Canelo. Only Floyd Mayweather in 2013 was able to give Canelo a defeat.

Looking at Canelo’s style he has two things all pro boxers wish to possess. He is extremely hard to hit clean, and his overhand punches are often explosive. He usually allows his opponents to jab until finding that deadly counter-punch. We all saw how he recently was able to wear down his opponents, close the distance and put up the KO. Our Alvarez vs Saunders betting preview suggests he will likely do the same in May with 1.16 odds at Bet365 Sportsbook.

Saunders has a nice record but he is far from being great

The two-weight champ Billy Joe Saunders has a nice record of 30-0, with 14 KOs. His last fight took place in December and ended in points win over Martin Murray. Before that Saunders had some impressive wins. He won the WBO middleweight title over Andy Lee in 2015 and defended it three times. He then moved up to the super middleweight and scored four impressive wins between 2018 and 2020.

However, online sportsbook news sites in Mexico reported that Saunders’s performance dropped a bit in the last two fights. Although he still has a good movement, he is not a massive power puncher like Canelo. Only 47 percent of his bouts ended in a KO. Therefore, there is a lot of skepticism that Saunders will be able to gain the respect of Canelo. If you are a fan of Saunders and trust he will make an upset, you can place a bet on him with 5.00.
