Cup leader Scottie Scheffler will start with a 2-stroke lead ahead of Patrick Cantlay
The last tournament of the 2021/22 PGA Tour, the 2022 Tour Championship is held this weekend, between 25-28 August at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. It is also the final event of the FedEx Cup playoff which will decide the champion. Scottie Sheffler leads the table and is favored to win this event too. He is followed by his main rivals, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy in the 2022 Tour Championship odds.
The Tour Championship has been one of the last events of the PGA Tour since its first edition in 1987. Since 2007 it is also the final event of the FedEx Cup playoff with only the best 30 players taking part in it. So the winner of this tournament also becomes the champion and wins the Calamity Jane trophy.
The player with the most FedEx Cup points starts the tournament at 10 under par, the second at -8, the third at -7, and so on. Scottie Scheffler will start from the first position after leading the table. He is followed by the defending champion Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. After the third-place player, Will Zalatoris had to withdraw due to an injury.
2022 Tour Championship Odds Favor the Cup Leader
Scottie Scheffler has won four tournaments this season including the 2022 Masters Tournament. These were his first wins on the PGA Tour, moving him to the top of the world ranking. And to the leading position in the FedEx Cup standings. Scheffler managed to keep his good form and finished T2 at the US Open. While he was third in the BMW Championship last week.
It also means that the 27-year-old American will start from the lead this weekend. And try to keep his two-stroke lead ahead of Patrick Cantlay. Scheffler’s odds to win his fifth tournament in the season are +200.00.
Online sportsbooks in the US mention his main chaser, Patrick Cantlay next in their 2022 Tour Championship odds. The world No3 won the BMW Championship last weekend which was his second trophy this season. Last year Cantlay also won the last two events of the playoff and became the FedEx Cup champion.
In 2021 he started from the lead which he managed to keep all along. Now it will be a different situation for Cantlay who has the odds of +400.00 to win anyway. His best mate and partner at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Xander Schauffele is the third-seed in the tournament. The 2017 Tour Championship winner will start four strokes behind with the odds of +650.00 to finish on top.
Chances of McIlroy and Other Top Players
Rory McIlroy has been one of the most balanced players of the season in spite of winning only two events. The 2021 CJ Cup last October and the 2022 RBC Canadian Open in June. He finished in the top 10 on nine occasions including all four major tournaments.
The world No3 has also won this tournament twice before, in 2016 and 2019, making him another strong contender. McIlroy will start from six strokes behind with the odds of +800.00 to win again. Jon Rahm hasn’t won this tournament yet but he was very close to it last season. Then he finished as the runner-up, but he was in better form in 2021.
The Spanish player still won the Mexico Open this year and will start from seven strokes behind. With the odds of +1200.00 to get his 8th PGA Tour victory. Online gambling sites in the US offer higher odds, +2500.00 for the victory of Sam Burns who is currently in fifth place in the cup. The 26-year-old American also had a great first half of the season after winning two tournaments. But he hasn’t been in such form recently. Just like the 2022 PGA Championship winner, Justin Thomas. The world No7 can still perform well in this curse after finishing twice as a runner-up. His odds to win now are +3100.00 on BetOnline.
